Statement of Goals:
The goal of this course is help medical students communicate effectively with Spanish speaking patients in the medical encounter. The course uses structured conversation exercises to help students develop fluency in taking a medical history, giving commands for a physical exam, and educating and counseling patients regarding recommended treatment. Attention is given to significant aspects of the culture in the local Spanish-speaking population. The class is appropriate for students who have completed MEFAM 408A or have had sufficient previous instruction in Spanish to be able to form basic sentences. The course is not designed for students who do not have a significant language barrier in communicating with monolingual Spanish speaking patients. Learning Activities
1. The students will be able to elicit a medical history in Spanish will little need for assistance from the instructor. 2. The students will be able to construct commands needed for the physical exam and to give treatment instructions in Spanish. 3. The students will be able to convey educational information about lifestyle and treatment adherence in Spanish.
