Molecular Genetic Pathology is a pathology subspecialty that encompasses the study, design, application, and validation of molecular techniques to the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of patients. It is a multifaceted clinical endeavor that is integral to the practice of both pathology and clinical medicine. The overall goal of medical student elective rotation is to provide the learner with exposure to the basic principles of molecular techniques and their applications to human disease. Learning Objectives -Interpret various nucleic acid-based molecular diagnostic assays relevant to human disease -Analyze relevant clinical/family history and previous pathology testing results and apply to daily clinical sign-out -Interact effectively and appropriately with medical technologists and other laboratory personnel |

| Learning Activities | |||
|
Medical students will collaboratively participate in daily sign-out of clinical molecular diagnostic tests with faculty, residents/fellows, and laboratory staff. They will attend and actively participate in required weekly laboratory and didactic conferences. Furthermore, medical students may be assigned quality improvement and/or validation projects appropriate for their level of training. Clinical and translational research opportunities also exist for the motivated individual.

| Evaluation Methods | |||
|
Clinical performance: 90% Oral presentation: 10% Grading scale: H, HP, P, MP, F Students will work closely with faculty, fellows, residents, and laboratory staff. The required evaluation forms are completed based on consensus of those who worked closely with the student. Students will also be required to give an oral presentation to the molecular oncology team before the end of their rotation. The topic will be defined during the rotation, and will focus on a molecular case, technique, or other clinical topic selected with input from faculty. |
