Course Description & Learning Objectives:
This elective is designed to provide the learner with introduction to general pathology, including surgical pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology, transfusion medicine and autopsy.

Learning Objectives

-Describe the process involved in surgical and cytopathology assessment of specimens in order to arrive at a diagnosis

-Identify the pertinent clinical and pathologic information needed in the work-up of hematolymphoid specimens

-Describe the major findings in at least one autopsy

Learning Activities
Students can rotate different days on various services:

(daily) - sign-out on surgical pathology, hematopathology, and/or autopsy services

(daily) - sign-out of cytopathology specimens and opportunities to observe fine needle aspiration procedures

(daily) - evaluation and sign-out of intraoperative specimens ("frozen section")

Also: opportunities to participate in additional subspeciality areas of surgical pathology, depending on student interest Standing Meetings & Conferences:

8 - 9 am (daily) - Resident Teaching conferences

12-1pm (Mondays) -- Pathology Grand Rounds
