Midwifery - Vision, Mission and Values
Did You Know?
BCM nurse-midwives offer prenatal care and well-woman gynecology at several Houston-area sites and have delivery privileges at Ben Taub Hospital.
In the early days, the midwifery practice was established at Jefferson Davis Hospital, one of the busiest maternal care settings in the United States. In 1990 the midwifery service moved to Ben Taub Hospital, which is located in Houston's Texas Medical Center. Many women each year are assisted in their birth experience by nurse-midwives at Ben Taub Hospital located in one of the largest incorporated medical centers in the world.
Dedicated to our patients and education, the BCM Midwifery Section providers are preceptors for the Community Nurse-Midwifery Education Program students and midwifery integration students from other programs. We work together with nursing education programs with their clinical rotations for basic nursing students. This allows RN students to see nurse-midwives functioning in an advanced, independent role.
To make the option of midwifery care available to all women of our community.
Baylor College of Medicine, Certified Nurse Midwives are committed to promoting the health and well-being of the women we serve by providing individualized, comprehensive obstetrical and well woman care. We can accomplish this by providing direct care and referring to other health care professionals based on the needs of the individual woman. We are also committed to participating in the education of other health care professionals including but not limited to midwifery, advanced practice nursing, medical and nursing students, as well as participating in research
As a group of midwives dedicated to the care of women, we have identified our primary values:
We are dedicated to providing excellent care to our patients based on their individual needs utilizing evidence based care. We will continue to further our knowledge through continuing education in an effort to maintain that quality. We hold ourselves out to the public as the best providers of low risk prenatal, well-woman, and contraceptive care.
We recognize that collaboration is essential to our success in accomplishing our mission. We will work together as a team of midwives, encouraging strong relationships with our physicians, other health care professionals, Baylor and Harris Health System staff, our patients, and our community.
We are strongly committed to each other, those we work with, our patients, and the community. We will follow through with the commitments we make for the purpose of accomplishing our mission.
We will accept and demonstrate individual empowerment to facilitate the accomplishment of our mission and for our own personal growth. We will strive to empower the women we serve and serve as role models to others around us.
We will show respect to others as well as ourselves, recognizing that working with others in a respectful environment will enable us to accomplish a greater goal.
