Dr. Puryear earned her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her internship in psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine, followed by a residency in psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine. She also completed training in psychoanalysis at the Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute.
Dr. Puryear is board certified in psychiatry.
Dr. Puryear has been recognized by Texas Monthly as a "Super Doc" and by H Texas Magazine as one of the "Best Doctors in Houston" and "Best Doctors for Women", as well as being named to "Best Doctors in America." She is a member of North American Society of Psychosocial Obstetrics and Gynecology (NASPOG), American Psychiatric Association and American Psychoanalytic Association. She served as an expert witness in the Andrea Yates trial and retrial.
