Item Definition

The Adam Award is given in honor of Ervin Adam, M.D., Ph.D., who was a distinguished faculty member in the Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology for many years. Dr. Adam was born in Czechoslovakia and spent the first half of his life there. He survived concentration camps during World War II, became a physician and epidemiologist, and led the effort that eradicated polio from Czechoslovakia. He came to the United States and joined the department in 1969, applied his expertise to studies of viruses and cancer, and became emeritus professor in 2015.  Dr. Adam received the Ceska Hlava Award, the highest scientific honor given by the Czech Republic, in 2012. The Adam Award highlights excellence in translational research and recognizes a departmental faculty member and trainees for an outstanding publication related to human disease with applicability to public health or medical care.

The Kelly Kahl Woodard Graduate Student Leadership Award is dedicated to the memory of Kelly Woodard, who was a predoctoral student in our MVM training program. Kelly joined the department in 2001 and passed away unexpectedly in the spring of 2003. In the brief time she was part of our department, Kelly showed a true dedication to hard work and excellence, having passed her qualifying exam, co-authored a paper, and submitted an NSF fellowship application within her first year-and-a-half of graduate school.

This award is given annually to a student working in the Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology in recognition of outstanding achievements or potential for future achievements in the areas of scholarship, research, and leadership.

Noonan Award

Description

The Noonan Award is dedicated to the memory of Christine A. Noonan, Ph.D., a predoctoral student of our training program and a former faculty member of the Division of Molecular Virology. Chris Noonan was an excellent virologist and a dedicated educator who was very involved in training students and fellows in classical and molecular virology.

Her life was cut short by brain cancer in 1995, but the education of the scientists of tomorrow, which was so important to her, continues to be a high priority in the department.

It is appropriate that the Noonan Award recognizes a predoctoral student and a postdoctoral fellow in the Molecular Virology & Microbiology training program for accomplishing outstanding research that resulted in a “Hot Paper of the Year.”
