Postdoctoral fellows participate in the departmental journal clubs and seminars and may audit any of the courses given in the Graduate School. They benefit from seminars and presentations throughout Baylor and the Texas Medical Center. The Molecular Virology trainees will participate as presenters at the journal clubs and will have the opportunity to interact with established scientists selected as guest lecturers in the Molecular Virology Seminar Series.

Each fellow has a defined project related to the major research goals of the laboratory in which the research is conducted. The project to be pursued is agreed upon by both the advisor and fellow. The conduct of the research is under the immediate supervision of the faculty member in charge of the laboratory.

Each new postdoctoral fellow will write a project plan of not more than five pages in which he/she defines the question to be addressed, provides background information, describes the significance of the problem, develops specific aims, and describes methods that will be used to address the problem. This plan will be submitted to the Steering Committee prior to the start of program support if possible, but not more than one month following the start of program support.

The Steering Committee will recommend special training opportunities, such as auditing of courses, depending upon the background of each postdoctoral trainee. Each postdoctoral trainee will meet with the Steering Committee every six months at which time he/she will submit a brief written progress report and present an oral summation of research progress and/or problems encountered. The Steering Committee will work with the trainee to devise possible solutions to problems or direct the trainee to additional resources.

The progress of postdoctoral fellows will also be evaluated by their performance in the laboratory. Prior to the semi-annual meeting with the Steering Committee, each trainee’s advisor will be asked to submit a brief written evaluation of the trainee’s laboratory performance. The Steering Committee will also follow the trainee’s progress by evaluating presentations at group meetings, journal clubs and seminars.

Finally, the ability to generate and report publishable data will be used as a criterion to determine successful progress of the trainee. Continued support from the training grant will be determined annually and will be contingent upon reasonable progress by the trainee.
