Clinical Cytogenetics

Trainees in Clinical Cytogenetics receive instruction and experience in basic cytogenetic techniques as well as cutting edge cytogenetic-molecular genetic diagnostic technology. Upon the successful completion of 24 months of training in our program, individuals are well-prepared to analyze and interpret results of standard cytogenetic analyses, as well as emerging microarray-based diagnostic tools. A block diagram with required educational conferences can be seen below.

The Cytogenetics Laboratory offers comprehensive diagnostic services including high-resolution chromosome analysis, FISH and Chromosomal Microarray Analysis (CMA) using both oligonucleotide and SNP arrays. These diagnostic tools are employed in the evaluation of tissue and blood for prenatal, constitutional and tumor diagnostics. The laboratory is leading the field in the use of CMA for clinical diagnostics including prenatal diagnosis. The laboratory performs FISH analysis for over 25 genetic disorders and is active in the area of cancer cytogenetics. The laboratory also serves as a reference source for complicated cases to other laboratories for resolution of complex cytogenetic findings.
