Mission, Values, and Imperatives

Our Mission

Baylor College of Medicine is committed to being a national leader in advancing human health through the integration of patient care, research, education, and community service.

Our Values

As Baylor College of Medicine proceeds into the new century, these principles guide our growth and operation:

The practice of medicine, the advancement of medicine through discovery, and the passing of the torch to the next generation of physicians, scientists and educators is not a pursuit for the faint of heart. Human illness and suffering demand much from those who strive to conquer disease by working to advance the frontiers of medicine and biomedical research. Baylor accepts this challenge with full knowledge of the costs and risks of failure and with the strength of heart and determination required to make a significant impact on our society. We stand united as physicians, researchers and educators with purpose, passion, and a sense of urgency to change the face of human health today and throughout the beginning of the new century.

Honoring our contract of service to the community in all our mission areas demands that we act with integrity, transparency, and honesty. The College holds this trust as a core value imbuing all of our missions.

BCM is a research-intensive academic medical center dedicated to a rapid pace of discovery and its equally rapid translation to patient care. We will maintain an eye on the future, take a stand at the forefront of discovery, reject complacency and commit to the advancement of medicine through collaborative research.

Quality in all pursuits remains a core value of the institution. We are dedicated to recruiting outstanding faculty, staff and trainees and through their efforts provide quality patient care, perform groundbreaking biomedical research and offer educational programs that attract and train the leaders of tomorrow.

Baylor affirms its covenant to serve the community. Foremost is our commitment to patients, both in our clinical practice and with partner hospitals. We strive to improve public health in all our endeavors and serve the community in all aspects of this process.

As a premier academic medical center, Baylor accepts the mantle of leadership in patient care, research, and education, inherent in our position in the community and country. We will lead with compassion, creativity, flexibility and steadfastness to meet the challenges of the new century and to fulfill our destiny of service and quality.

Collaborations are integral to the success of each of our mission areas. We will encourage and support collaborative interactions among our faculty, staff and trainees. External collaborations are also vital. As a free-standing medical school, Baylor desires and is committed to strong alliances and collaboration with hospital partners, academic collaborators, and the community.

BCM values academic pursuits and commits its efforts to the scholarly pursuit of knowledge for our trainees, our patients, and our community.

Our faculty, staff and trainees are the heart of the organization. We remain committed to their dedication and pledge to recognize individual uniqueness and engage all constituencies in guiding our path to excellence in all missions.
