The goals of the Department of Medicine Research Committee are to:
- Support the research careers and development of faculty and trainees (post-doctoral fellows; MERIT awardees)
- Promote collaboration of faculty among the broader range of investigators at Baylor and affiliated institutions
- Strategically review on an ongoing basis our research portfolio, funding opportunities, and research space allocation to identify opportunities for strategic growth and recruitment to enhance our mission

The committee's strategic priorities are to:
- Develop internal grant review process for the Department of Medicine for K awards, initial R01 submissions, initial renewal of R01 grants and review of grants for faculty at risk with the goal of improving the funding rate for submitted grants over the next five years with yearly evaluation of progress
- Review current research funding including funding to medicine/center faculty (Ellis, Osborne, etc.), which includes NIH, VA, not-for-profit such as AHA, ADA and pharma/biotech, with the goal of increasing the amount and diversity of total grant funding in the Department of Medicine over the next 5 years with yearly evaluation of progress
- Work with each section to develop a tentative plan for 2018 which will be submitted to the department's Pre-Award Office in July of 2017 for planned grant submissions with the goal of increasing submissions and funding and optimizing work flow for the office

The committee will also address the following:
