Clinical Research Interests:

Coronary heart disease, or CHD is the leading cause of death of both American men and women. A healthy lifestyle, including a sensible diet, regular physical activity, and managing stress, can significantly reduce the risk factors associated with the development of CHD. Dr. Foreyt's research focuses on developing strategies for maintaining a healthy lifestyle to reduce the occurrence of CHD and other chronic diseases. Studies at the Behavioral Medicine Research Center include efforts to improve methods to reduce body weight in obese individuals, blood pressure in hypertensive patients, glucose in diabetic patients, and lipid levels in dyslipidemic patients.

Dr. Foreyt's group also works with healthy individuals, exploring strategies for keeping them healthy. Because minority groups are often at especially high risk for certain diseases, the group's work has included a focus on African-American and Mexican-American individuals. Examples of recent grants include "Cuidando el Corazon: Weight Reduction for Mexican Americans," funded by the NHLBI; "Unidos en Salud: Weight Loss for Mexican Americans, "funded by the NIDDK; "Long-Term Outcome of Obesity Treatment in Minority Women: Black American Lifestyle Intervention," funded by the NIDDK and the Office of Minority Health, and "Look Ahead: Action for Health in Diabetes" funded by NIDDK. Because obesity is the number one public health problem in our country, much of Dr. Foreyt's research deals with understanding its etiology and treating its effects. For example, his group is examining the use of very low calorie diets, nutritional supplements, different kinds of physical activity, and pharmacotherapy in the treatment of obesity. They hope that the research will lead to effective behavioral strategies that can easily be incorporated into the lifestyles of Americans, making it easier for Americans to be healthy.
