- PGY 1 residents earn $44,302
- PGY 2 residents earn $45,961

Medical, dental, life and accidental death & dismemberment insurance are provided at no cost to residents. In the event a house officer becomes seriously ill or sustains an injury requiring absence from work for more than six months, long-term disability insurance is provided at no cost to house staff. Coverage for dependants is available at competitive group rates.
Two calendar weeks for interns, three calendar weeks for second and third year residents. An additional four days off per year are allowed for holidays.
Residents have 14 calendar days of sick time per academic year. Unused sick leave can be carried forward and used in subsequent years.
Leave up to four weeks utilizing combined sick leave and vacation time may be used as maternity/paternity leave.
Continuing Medical Education/Book Allowance
In addition to vacation, second and third year residents in good standing are given the choice of five days (including travel time) and up to $500 to attend the conference of their choice or a book allowance of up to $250.
Meals are provided to residents at Ben Taub General Hospital free of charge when on service and on call. This includes the cafeteria and McDonald's.
Our residency program covers registration for professional organizations such as Harris County Medical Society, Texas Academy of Family Physicians and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Lab coats are purchased for each resident (two in the first year and one in each of the next two years). Fresh scrubs are provided to all residents for hospital use (after a deposit).
