Application - Residency
Residency training in Anesthesiology consists of four years of graduate medical education. Three years of this training must be in clinical Anesthesiology. The other year is the so-called "Clinical Base Year" of training which consists of 12 months of broad medical education and is usually the first year of the Anesthesiology training continuum.
All applicants to the BCM Anesthesiology Residency Program must register with the National Residency Matching Program (Match). Information regarding requirements for the Match is located at www.nrmp.org. The Program currently offers positions in the following categories:
- Categorical (Clinical Base Year + 3 years of Anesthesiology at BCM)
- Advanced (3 years of Anesthesiology only at BCM after an internship in another program)
- Physician only - this category is reserved for those residents who matched in another GME program in a previous Match (Anesthesiology or other) and who wish to switch into our Anesthesiology program at the CA-1 (PGY-2 level).
Physician Only applicants must show evidence of previous current or future clinical training in a Clinical Base year at an approved program in the United States.
The application deadline is Nov. 1 but we highly suggest that your application is completed before then. Applications must be submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) which is a program of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Baylor College of Medicine requires all applicants to meet the terms for a Physician-in-Training permit or Texas state license as outlined by the Texas Medical Board at www.tmb.state.tx.us. Recruited physicians must obtain either a permit or license prior to entering the program. The department will guide you through the application process once you have accepted a position.
The ERAS application includes the following items. No additional items are required for the initial application.
- Common Application Form
- MSPE (Dean's Summary)
- Medical School Transcript
- USMLE transcript*
- Letters of Recommendation (a minimum of 3)
- Curriculum Vitae and Personal Statement
- Valid ECFMG certificate (IMGs)
*USMLE Step 1 scores of 220 and above are considered more competitive. Passing the exams on the first attempt is required. Step 2 is recommended but not required at the time of application for recent medical graduates. Steps 2 and 3 must be passed prior to beginning PGY-2.
International medical school graduates
In the addition to the above, IMGs are required to have completed, or be in the process of completing, one year of clinical training (PGY-1) in the United States in an ACGME-accredited program. IMGs must have the documents necessary for a J-1 visa, or hold a green card at the time of application. Applications are accepted through ERAS during the Fall/Winter of the internship year to be considered for PGY-2 position in the Physician Only category of the NRMP Match. More information for IMGs is provided by the ECFMG at www.ecfmg.org.
The Department of Anesthesiology Residency Selection Committee reviews applications and begins extending invitations in November. The most qualified applicants from an extensive applicant pool (over 700 each year) are considered for interviews. Approximately 110-140 interviews are conducted between November and January each year.
