Dear Members of the Baylor College of Medicine Community,
It has been a good week with more vaccines on the way and the numbers in our area looking better. In this week’s video, I review some of the virus variants that have emerged as well as some possible new therapies that are being studied.
Moderna has already started a trial on an additional booster in response to the variants that are emerging. The sooner we get people vaccinated, the less likelihood of more variants emerging. The United States has purchased millions more doses of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, which is good news. Meanwhile, three fascinating studies have appeared in the journal Science in the past month where scientists have looked at existing drugs to treat the virus. One looks much more effective than Remdesivir.
In closing, Dr. Jim McDeavitt, who oversees our Incident Command Center, has a plan to make July 4, 2021, COVID-19 Independence Day. It can happen. Be safe, wear your mask and get vaccinated when you are able.
