July 2, 2020
Dear Members of the Baylor College of Medicine Community,
As we begin the long Fourth of July weekend, I spent some time in this week’s video message talking about hospital capacity and encouraging everyone to focus on wearing masks and practicing social distancing. It is unlikely that when you buckle your seat belt your first thought is if I am involved in a terrible wreck, I hope there is a trauma bed for me. Instead of worrying about ICU capacity, we should be worried about not getting the virus to begin with. Someone who does not feel comfortable in a mask will certainly feel uncomfortable on a ventilator. My message also includes updates on some COVID treatments that are working and a history of how ICUs began.
I hope all of you will have a restful holiday weekend. Stay home with members of your own household. And anytime you are out, please wear a mask and stay six feet away from others. It will take all of us doing our part to get through this pandemic.
