Dear Members of the Baylor College of Medicine Community,
The status of COVID is about the same as last week. With that said, the focus of this week’s video is on RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), one of the most common causes of childhood illness. Almost all children have had RSV by the age of 2.
Across the United States, RSV usually circulates from late December to mid-February but it can change from year to year. The past two years have been an anomaly as a result of COVID and social distancing. RSV was very low, as was flu. Now, we have a larger and more susceptible population driving a huge number of RSV cases.
The video includes info about RSV in adults, how transmission occurs, diagnosis, treatment and some promising news on the vaccine front.
I also welcome a special guest, Dr. Flor Munoz, associate professor of pediatrics – infectious diseases, to talk about RSV, one of her areas of specialization. Lots of information this week on a very important issue.
Today is Veterans Day, honoring military veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Please take a moment to think about and thank those who have served our country.
