Dear Members of the Baylor College of Medicine Community,
In addition to providing the latest COVID numbers for cases, hospitalizations and deaths, in this week’s video I talk about kids returning to school and the latest research on the impact of vaccination on the COVID-19 pandemic.
Make sure your kid is vaccinated and boosted if eligible, and then don’t worry about sending them unmasked to school. That’s for now and if a new variant arrives and/or there is a new outbreak in the school, those recommendations might change.
Over the last several weeks. I have heard from many people who say it does not seem like the vaccines have been that effective. I will share several graphics today that show how effective vaccines have been in preventing severe illness. Now, because a large number of people have been vaccinated, we are seeing the effects of herd immunity. Omicron is causing illness, but mild symptoms in people who have been vaccinated and boosted. The risk of death from COVID now is 14 times higher if you have not been vaccinated.
Moderna and Pfizer are working on vaccines that target both the original variant and Omicron. More on how the authorization process is going next week.
Meanwhile, the COVID threat level in Harris County has been lowered to medium, so Baylor is relaxing mask mandates.
As the summer break comes to a close, I hope you all have a relaxing weekend. Stay safe!
