Global Education and Training Rotation Program

Baylor Global Health aims to support global health experiences that are of high educational value that will be responsibly implemented with appropriate supervision and structure in an ethically sound and culturally appropriate manner. It is imperative that this program serves to benefit both trainees and host sites, with keeping the prioritization of the safety and welfare of trainees in mind, and remain aligned with the strategic priorities of Baylor College of Medicine.

The Global Education and Training Rotation Program application for admission is open to all residents, fellows, M.D., Ph.D. and Health Professions students. Applications will be evaluated by the Baylor Global Health College Globalization Council. All applications will be scored on an NIH 1-9 scale using the following characteristics:

• Innovativeness of the proposal
• Sustainability of the scholarly activity
• Alignment with the Baylor College of Medicine mission
• Multi-disciplinary (Activities with interdepartmental collaboration will be given greater consideration)

Student applicants must meet the following prerequisites prior to their admission into the Global Education and Training Rotation Program:

• M.D. students must have completed rotations in internal medicine, surgery and one other core clinical field.
• Ph.D. students must have permission from their thesis advisor.
• Health Professions students must have the approval from their program.

M.D., Ph.D. and Health Professions Student Applicants

• Students must identify a Baylor College of Medicine faculty member willing to serve as supervisor in preparing for and completing their global health activity.
• On-site supervision by a locally certified health professional must be guaranteed for the entire duration of the scholarly project.
• The on-site supervisor must complete the evaluation form of the student’s performance.
• Supply all information required in the application form, including location and dates of the scholarly activity and a description of the project.

Resident / Fellow Applicants

• Applicants must submit a letter from their program director confirming the applicant is able to perform a one-month away rotation on behalf of Baylor College of Medicine.
• On-site supervision by a locally certified health professional must be guaranteed for the entire duration of the scholarly project.
• The on-site supervisor must complete the evaluation form of the resident/fellow’s performance.
• Supply all information required in the application form, including location and dates of the scholarly activity and a description of the project.

Projects will be prioritized based upon educational merit, fit with the goals and mission of Baylor Global Health and the ability to contribute to a sustainable and mutually beneficial relationship between the College and its partner sites.

M.D., Ph.D., Health Professions Student Applicants

• Field work for the International Health Track, or in conjunction with the National School of Tropical Medicine.
• Sites that have previously hosted trainees, have the ability to provide ongoing Baylor College of Medicine involvement, have longstanding or well developed BCM partnerships, or are staffed by BCM faculty or affiliated faculty members.
• Departments that have identified a faculty member (with protected time and administrative support) responsible for discipline specific global health education for trainees.
• Departments in which a longitudinal global health curriculum with competency-based goals and objectives and a standardized evaluation system is available.

Resident / Fellow Applicants

• Field work for the Diploma of Tropical Medicine Program.
• Sites that have previously hosted trainees, have the ability to provide ongoing Baylor College of Medicine involvement, have longstanding or well developed BCM partnerships, or are staffed by BCM faculty or BCM affiliated faculty members.
• Departments that have identified a faculty member (with protected time and administrative support) responsible for discipline specific global health education for trainees.
• Departments in which a longitudinal global health curriculum with competency-based goals and objectives and a standardized evaluation system is available.

If approved, students and residents/fellows will be required to:

• Sign a professionalism agreement related to their conduct abroad
• Purchase and provide proof of emergency evacuation insurance coverage
• Attend travel clinic and follow all advised travel precautions
• Review the United State's - State Department Country Report - website for travel advisories and CDC website for health related advisories
• Register with the United States Embassy prior to travel
• Designate persons both at the elective site and in the United States who may be contacted in the event of an emergency
• Submit all necessary paperwork to the Baylor Global Health office prior to travel (including a copy of their passport, travel itinerary, medical evacuation insurance card and emergency contact form)

Upon completion of scholarly activity, students, residents and fellows will be required to:

• Submit a copy of the evaluation from their on-site supervisor to Baylor Global Health
• Complete a written evaluation of the project and provide it to Baylor Global Health
• Meet with their Baylor College of Medicine faculty mentor for debriefing and feedback regarding their project
• Present a poster presentation at the Annual Globalization Forum
