Overview:

A 6-Part Video Series with Supporting Materials to Help Families Create Healthy Home Food Environments Building Healthy Families:

All the materials, including the videos, are available to download at no cost and are available in both English and Spanish. The components for each topic include a class outline and suggested activities for the teacher, the video for that particular topic, participant handouts, recipes, and the goal sheet related to the focus of the lesson.

The material will fit into a 45-60 minute time frame. Here is a suggested outline:

1. Introduction (class content and sequence of events): 1 minute
  • Nutrition Basics
  • Smart Start Breakfasts and Healthy Snacks
  • Fruits and Vegetables
  • Milk and Meat
  • Breads and Grains
  • Stretching Your Food $$$ and Healthy Fast Food
2. Class topic here-overview: 10 minutes
3. Video Presentation: (see below for video content/handouts 3 minutes (5 minutes for class 1- no intermission)
4. Video Intermission Discussion: 3-4 minutes
5. Return to Video: 2 minutes
6. Class Video/Topic Final Discussion: 10 minutes
7. Goal for the week: 3 – 5 minutes
8. Class Activity/ Food Preparation: 15-20 minutes

The lessons can be used in sequence or separately, depending upon the audience. The videos are a key educational component as they serve to stimulate discussion and allow the participants to relate quickly to the topic of the lesson. Since the videos were actually produced in both English and Spanish languages, there was nothing lost in translation. The TALK posters, a table of contents page, and a cover page for a notebook are also provided.

You can view brief reviews of each topic by clicking on the title listed on the web page. Click on English or Spanish for the translated materials which are in a PDF format to download them onto your computer.

These files are large (from 80- 162mb) and will take some time to download depending on your internet connection speed.
