Good tidings on campus

Shuttle and food services

Remember that the shuttle will be operating on an abbreviated schedule on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. In addition, food options on campus will be limited. See below for information for main Baylor and Jamail food service, and check the café at your location for more information.
-Morrison Café at main Baylor: Closing at noon on Monday, Dec. 24
-Coffee Corner at main Baylor: Closing at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 24-28
-Mary O's at Jamail Specialty Care Center: Closed Dec. 24-28


Awards and Recognitions

Aagaard receives Nature mentoring award

Dr. Kjersti AagaardDr. Kjersti Aagaard, the Henry and Emma Meyer Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology, has been honored with a 2018 Nature Award for Mentoring in Science. The award recognizes the importance of mentorship in scientific career development. With the prize money, she will establish the Aagaard Research Mentorship Award in Pregnancy and Women's Health, which will honor a mentor-mentee pair who demonstrates excellence in the field. Green earns library of medicine fellowship

Susan GreenSusan Green, lead project manager for Dr. Joseph Coselli, vice-chair of surgery and chief of cardiothoracic surgery, was selected as a 2019 Michael E. DeBakey Fellow in the History of Medicine by the National Library of Medicine, part of the NIH. The fellowship includes a $10,000 grant to support her research project on "The Development of the DeBakey Classification of Aortic Dissection" and allows her to spend four weeks at the NLM over the next year.

Three faculty named to National Academy of Inventors

Dr. Mary EstesDr. Bert O'MalleyDr. Huda ZoghbiDr. Mary Estes, Cullen Foundation Endowed Chair of Human and Molecular Virology, Dr. Bert O'Malley, chancellor, and Dr. Huda Zoghbi, professor, director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, have been elected fellows of the National Academy of Inventors. They were honored for having created or facilitated outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society. Read more.

HR News

-Baylor College of Medicine has partnered with ADP, a leading provider of human resources management software and services, to provide better access to pay statements and W-2s. This will offer the option to access pay statements and W-2s from any computer, mobile phone or tablet. Watch for upcoming communications regarding registration details.
-The 2019 BCM BeWell Getaway to Good Health challenge will start Jan. 1. Participants track their steps per day, accumulating the equivalent of walking from Spokane, Wash., where the last challenge left off, to San Diego, and must meet certain other criteria. Prizes and BeWell Vitality points are available. See the guidelines and sign up online on the Vitality portal under "My Challenges." Questions? Email wellness@bcm.edu.

Deadline extended for precision medicine project applications

The deadline has been extended to Jan. 4 to submit proposals for the Office of the President's Precision Medicine/Population Health Initiative, which offers funding of up to $30,000 for projects that support the strategic plan to position the College as a learning health system. Proposals must include clinical and basic/translational research team members and a faculty supervisor and must be relevant to population-based clinical care, leveraging large data sets.
