Health Professions Commencement

Students in Baylor's School of Health Professions celebrated their commencement last Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Stafford Centre. The graduates included 39 students in the Physician Assistant Program, 16 Doctor of Nursing Practice students, and 24 students in the Orthotics and Prosthetics Program. Congratulations to all!

Albert Schweitzer program recruiting prospective fellows

The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Houston – Galveston is accepting applications for its 2020-2021 class of fellows. This one-year interdisciplinary, mentored fellowship program is focused on health-related community service and leadership development. Students enrolled in graduate or professional degree-granting programs interested in applying should be prepared to partner with a local community agency and design a community service project that provides direct health services to an underserved population. Awards and Recognitions

Baylor-authored NEJM paper recognized for impact

The National Human Genome Research Institute has selected a paper authored by faculty members in the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics as one of the 10 most impactful papers in genomic medicine for their 2019 year in review. The paper, titled "Reanalysis of Clinical Exome Sequencing Data," was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in June. Read more about their work on the Baylor news page. The full top 10 list is published in the American Journal of Human Genetics.

Dec. 14: TMC Orchestra holiday performance

The TMC Orchestra, which includes members of the BCM community, is partnering with the Houston Choral Society for a performance of Francis Poulenc’s "Gloria," during A Glorious Christmas, Saturday, Dec. 14, with a pre-concert lecture at 7 p.m. and concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Foundry Church, 8350 Jones Road, Houston 77065. Dec. 17: Space (and Earth) technology

"Democratizing Medical Imaging Globally: A Clinician’s View from Inside a Transformative Tech Company," a presentation by Dr. John Martin, chief medical officer with the Butterfly Network, is Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 4 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor. Presented by Baylor's Center for Space Medicine and Translational Research Institute for Space Health, this innovation-focused talk will offer insight on hand-held ultrasound technology and the future of healthcare in space, and on Earth.

Jan. 7 – 9: TAMEST 2020

Register now for the Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas, TAMEST, 2020 Annual Conference: Innovating Texas, Jan. 7 -9 at the Fairmont Dallas Hotel. The conference will explore how basic research leads to new technologies, products and companies and showcase avenues to commercialization for researchers across an array of disciplines. Baylor's Dr. Huda Zoghbi will moderate a panel discussion with Texas Nobel Laureates Dr. Michael Brown and Joseph Goldstein, both of UT Southwestern Medical Center. Open to all in the research community; register online.

BeWell news: Join final leg of health challenge!

Join the final year of BCM BeWell's Getaway to Good Health step-tracking health challenge. The goal is to accumulate the equivalent steps of walking from San Diego, where the challenge left off, back to Houston, where it started six years ago. Earn up to 3,500 BCM BeWell Vitality points by completing the challenge by November 2020. Spouses/domestic partners may also join. To register, head to the BCM BeWell portal, and click on ‘My Challenges’ under the ‘Community’ tab. Questions? Email wellness@bcm.edu.

Volunteer judges needed for middle school science fairs

Judges are needed for middle school science fairs on Jan. 11 at Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan and Jan. 17 at Baylor College of Medicine Biotech Academy at Rusk. Volunteer judges should have first-hand experience in developing and conducting scientific or engineering research. Please commit to a minimum of one hour, or judging about six projects.
