Baylor doctors among city's best Baylor doctors were featured prominently in the Houston Chronicle's Top Doctors 2016 article. The local list was taken from a larger list of America's Top Doctors, compiled by industry specialist Castle Connolly. See all the Baylor doctors featured in the Chronicle article. Events Allied Health commencement Dec. 3 The School of Allied Health Sciences Commencement will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Grand Hall at Lancaster Center located at 71 Oakdale Street, Houston, Texas 77004. The allied health graduating class includes 18 Doctor of Nursing Practice Program students, 19 Orthotics and Prosthetics Program students and 39 Physician Assistant Program students. Congratulations to all the graduating allied health students! Marfan symposium Dec. 3 Several Baylor doctors will speak at the Marfan Foundation Houston Regional Symposium Dec. 3 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the United Way Community Center, 50 Waugh Drive. Speakers will present the latest information about Marfan syndrome and related connective tissue disorders, and patients and families will have the opportunity to network. Register online. Baylor merchandise sale Dec. 6 Baylor merchandise, including T-shirts, hoodies and lots more, will be on sale Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the E-hallway in front of the cafeteria at main Baylor. Strategies to deal with difficult conversations Faculty, staff and trainees are encouraged to attend a discussion led by Ombuds Laurel Hyle on "Communications Strategies for Difficult Conversations" Tuesday, Dec. 6, from noon to 1 p.m. and from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Sponsored by the Provost and the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, the small group sessions provide opportunities to address feelings and concerns associated with post-election and campus climate incidents that have occurred across the country. DocTalk on diabetes Dec. 7 DocTalk will be held Wednesday, Dec. 7, at noon in Cullen Auditorium with Dr. Ashok Balasubramanyam, who will discuss "Living with Diabetes." Balasubramanyam is professor of medicine – endocrinology. DocTalk is a series of informal, lunchtime talks with Baylor physicians on a variety of health topics. Eligible employees who attend will receive BCM BeWell Vitality points. Compliance presentation Dec. 7 The Compliance Office will hold its quarterly education talk on "Inpatient Evaluation and Management Services" on Wednesday, Dec. 7, from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in the McNair conference room A. Holiday concert Dec. 8 The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology presents the Houston Tuesday Musical Club Chorus performing a holiday concert, "The Very Best Time of the Year," on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016 from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. in Rayzor Lounge. Cookies and punch will be served after the concert. Dec. 8 events to focus on science, biomedical research Dr. Bruce Alberts of the University of California – San Francisco and a past president of the National Academy of Science, will speak at two campus events Dec. 8. He will give a talk titled "Spreading Science Throughout Society: How and Why," presented by the Center for Professionalism Medicine, at noon in room N315 in the Alkek building. Pizza will be served to the first 125 attendees. At 4 p.m. in McMillian Auditorium, he will speak on "Maintaining Excellence in the Biomedical Research Enterprise: Much Work to Do." This talk is part of the Team Launch program. A reception will follow in the DeBakey museum. Bone marrow drive Dec. 12 Be the Match and the BCM Postdoctoral Association will host a marrow donor registry drive Monday, Dec. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the TMC Commons. Come sign up and do a cheek swab to see if you can save the life of a blood cancer patient. Nearly 80 percent of donations are from blood stem cells – a procedure similar to donating plasma. College News Section of emergency medicine ACLS/BLS Certification Program Time to renew your advanced cardiac life support or basic life support certification? The section of emergency medicine's ACLS-BLS Program offers semi-monthly ACLS, BLS and combined re-certification in-person courses. The program is American Heart Association certified and offered for $135 for ACLS or $175 for ACLS and BLS combined. The next course is Saturday, Dec. 10, at 9 a.m. on the main Baylor campus. Volunteers needed for COPD research study Are you a healthy adult between the age of 40 and 60 or an adult patient who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis or emphysema and quit smoking after a heavy smoking history of 20 pack-years? A pack year is defined as 20 cigarettes smoked every day for one year. You may be eligible to participate in a clinical research study being conducted at the Baylor Airways Clinical Research Center. Compensation will be provided for time and travel. Health insurance is not necessary to participate.
