Hotez honored by Ronald McDonald House

Dr. Peter HotezDr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor, was honored with the Ronald McDonald House Charities Medical Award of Excellence earlier this month during a ceremony at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. The award recognizes individuals for their leadership and contributions to improving the critical needs of children and their families throughout the world.

Kuy among 'Outstanding Women in Science'

Dr. SreyRam KuyThe Association for Women in Science Gulf Coast Houston Chapter is honoring Dr. SreyRam Kuy, assistant professor of surgery, as an Outstanding Woman in Science. Kuy, who also is deputy chief medical officer for quality and safety at the South Central VA Health Care Network, will be recognized at a seminar and reception Thursday, Dec. 5, 6 p.m., Cullen Auditorium. Poveda named STAT Wunderkind

Dr. Cristina Poveda CuevasDr. Cristina Poveda Cuevas, a research associate in the National School of Tropical Medicine, has been named a 2019 STAT Wunderkind by STAT News, a national publication focused on finding and telling compelling stories about health, medicine and scientific discovery. The award celebrates early-career scientists for their groundbreaking work in academia, industry and the clinic. Poveda's research has focused on the development of an effective mRNA vaccine against Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease in Latin America.

Preventza to lead endovascular society

Dr. Ourania PreventzaDr. Ourania Preventza, professor of cardiothoracic surgery, has been named president-elect of the International Society of Endovascular Specialists, a prestigious society that represents interventionists dedicated to cardiovascular disease. She is the first woman to be named ISEVS president-elect.

Smith to lead graduate school

Dr. Carolyn SmithDr. Carolyn Smith was appointed dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences by the Baylor College of Medicine Board of Trustees at its Wednesday meeting. A professor of molecular and cellular biology who has served in numerous department and school leadership roles, Smith has been serving as interim dean since July. Today: BCM Art Show

Today is the last day to view and bid on items in the annual BCM Art Show. Check it out in the second-floor lobby of the Alkek Building, then bid online. Proceeds benefit the Arts in Medicine Program at Texas Children's Hospital.

Dec. 2: Ethics Ground Rounds

Dr. Andrew Childress, assistant professor in Baylor's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, will present Ethics Grand Rounds on "Medical Futility and Requests for Potentially Inappropriate Treatment," Dec. 2, 5 – 6 p.m., Denton A. Dec. 5: Professionalism Talk

Dr. Jody Hoffer Gittell, professor and executive director of the Relational Coordination Research Collaborative at Brandeis University, will present "Transforming Professionalism Using the Principles of Relational Coordination," Thursday, Dec. 5, at 12:15 p.m. in room M112 (lunch to first 100 people) and at 4 p.m. in room 201A (reception following). Sponsored by the Center for Professionalism, the Department of Medicine and the Academy of Distinguished Educators.

School of Health Professions events

  • The Baylor community is invited to the J. David Holcomb Health Professions Research Day, featuring poster presentations from students in the Orthotics and Prosthetics and Physician Assistant programs, Wednesday, Dec. 4, 1 – 3 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor.
  • The School of Health Professions Commencement is Saturday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Stafford Centre. Congratulations to our graduating students!

College News

Complete flu attestation by Nov. 30

All Baylor employees and trainees are required to get a flu vaccine and complete the online attestation form by Nov. 30. Haven't gotten the shot yet? Check the Occupational Health Program website for flu shot dates and walk-in information or get the shot at healthcare provider or local pharmacy.

Funding available for environmental health research

Submissions are open for pilot funding through the Gulf Coast Center for Precision Environmental Health for research at the intersection of genetics/epigenetics, environmental health and data science to understand determinants of disease risk and for environmentally-based community outreach and engagement projects. Learn more and submit online by Nov. 25. The Center is a joint initiative of Baylor, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and UT Health.

BeWell news: Medical premium reduction deadline

Benefits-eligible employees and their spouses/domestic partners enrolled in a Baylor medical plan who earn the required BCM BeWell Vitality points by Nov. 30, 2019, will receive a medical premium reduction for 2020. Be sure to complete activities such as financial one-on-ones, biometric screening and athletic events prior to the deadline to ensure your points are uploaded in time. Learn more. Questions? Thanksgiving information

Baylor College of Medicine will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, and will reopen Friday, Nov. 29. Food options and shuttle service will be limited; see below for information. In addition, NewsLink will not be published next week; it will resume on Friday, Dec. 6. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

  • Morrison Café and the Coffee Corner at main Baylor will close at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, and will be closed Nov. 28 and 29.
  • Mary O's Café at the Jamail Specialty Care Center will close at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, and will be closed Nov. 28-29.
  • The shuttle service will operate on an abbreviated schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 27, and Friday, Nov. 29. Only the Red shuttle route will run, from 6:45 a.m. – 4 p.m., with the following route: Main Baylor – Baylor Clinic – Jamail Specialty Care Center – Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, McNair Campus – VA Hospital – McGovern Campus.
