Blaney appointed to oncology group

Dr. Susan Blaney, professor of pediatrics and deputy director of Texas Children's Cancer Center, was appointed to the hematology-oncology self-assessment team of the American Board of Pediatrics. In this role, she will develop content for Maintenance of Certification exams, one component of which is self-assessment.

Harris named to group on women in medicine

Dr. Toi Harris, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and of pediatrics and associate provost of institutional diversity and inclusion and student services, was appointed as a member-at-large to the steering committee of the AAMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science. The group advances participation and inclusion of women within academic medicine by addressing gender equity, recruitment and retention, awards and recognition and career advancement. She attended her first steering committee meeting Nov. 11 at the AAMC Annual Meeting in Seattle.

Mandava honored by alma mater

Dr. Pitchaiah Mandava, associate professor of neurology, was recognized as a Distinguished Alumni of his alma mater in India, Manipal Institute of Technology. He was honored with this prestigious award at a ceremony last month, where he delivered a talk on his engineering principles used to develop a new way to analyze clinical trials.

Endowment established to honor Mattox, support community

Faculty members in the surgery department have created the Kenneth L. Mattox, M.D., Endowment in Surgery. This honors Dr. Ken Mattox, Distinguished Service Professor and chief of staff at Ben Taub Hospital, and supports Houston's underserved community through the clinical and educational activities of Ben Taub and the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor. Mattox is known for his patient care and for his leadership among trainees and colleagues, and he has worked tirelessly to build Ben Taub into one of the country's top Level 1 trauma centers.

Baylor merchandise sale today and Dec. 6

Baylor merchandise, including T-shirts, hoodies and lots more, will be on sale Friday, Nov. 18, and Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the E-hallway in front of the cafeteria at main Baylor.

Register for GI surgery, endoscopy and oncology symposium

The Divisions of General Surgery and Surgical Oncology in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery will host Transforming Surgery 2017: Innovation in GI Surgery, Endoscopy and Oncology Jan. 13-14 in Kleberg Auditorium on the Baylor campus. Topics will include innovative new methods to manage esophageal reflux, hernias, pancreatitis, carcinoid tumors, low rectal tumors, breast cancer, endocrine tumors and acute surgical emergencies. The agenda includes case presentations with expert panel discussion and a keynote address from American College of Surgeons President Dr. Courtney M. Townsend. CME credit available. Register online.

Nominations open for Robertson Presidential Award

Nominations are being accepted for the 2017 Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson, Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education. This college-wide award for faculty educational service is offered for active faculty members who have made stellar and enduring contributions to the educational mission of college. Volunteers needed for study on depression and gut function

Participants are needed for a study to understand how depression and gut function may be related in youth. Volunteers between the ages of 7 and 17 years who have experienced symptoms of depression and those who have not are both needed for the study. Volunteers must be healthy, not have taken any antibiotics in the past six months and not have taken any psychiatric medications in the past three months. The study visit will involve completing questionnaires, providing a stool sample, taking a sugar solution and collecting urine for 24 hours, a blood draw and bone scan. Volunteers will be compensated for their time and mileage will be reimbursed. Those interested should complete the online screening form. 2017 Health Savings Account contributions

If you are planning to remain in the Health and Savings PPO option in 2017 and wish to continue making voluntary contributions to your HSA account, you must complete a 2017 Salary Deduction Agreement form.
