Postdoc Born receives Zoghbi Scholar Award

Dr. Heather BornDr. Heather Born, Baylor postdoctoral associate in the laboratory of Dr. Anne Anderson, received the 2019 Duncan NRI Zoghbi Scholar Award. This is a special fund established by Dr. Huda Zoghbi, director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's Hospital, to honor trainees who have worked in her lab and foster the next generation of successful scientists. Born's proposal was titled, "Integrative neurophysiological and behavioral approaches to understanding neuroinflammation in epilepsy." She received a certificate and plaque from Zoghbi on Nov. 5 at the Duncan NRI.

Dark honored as young leader in EM

Dr. Cedric DarkDr. Cedric Dark, assistant professor of emergency medicine, was named to the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association’s 2019 45 under 45 list, which recognizes outstanding young physicians whose contributions embody the spirit of the specialty. Dark was noted as a leader in health policy and advocacy and as a mentor to trainees. In addition, he was named to the Doctors for America Board of Directors at the organization’s national leadership conference last weekend at Johns Hopkins University.

McPherson earns retina research award

Dr. Alice McPhersonDr. Alice McPherson, professor of ophthalmology, received the 2019 Retina Hall of Fame Award for her extraordinary contributions to the field of retinal diseases. She was honored last month at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Retina Research Foundation. McPherson is one of the world's leading vitreoretinal specialists and the founder of the retinal service at Baylor.

Schrader named Texas Children's PA of the Year

Anna SchraderAnna Schrader, certified physician assistant and instructor of pediatrics, was named the 2019 recipient of the Physician Assistant of the Year award from Texas Children's Hospital. Schrader demonstrates a commitment to patient and family centered care in her work with the multidisciplinary lung transplant team, and she is involved in education through mentoring students and co-chairing the annual TCH Advanced Practice Provider Conference. She was honored at a reception on Monday, Nov. 11.

Today: Hematology/oncology research summit

The second annual Hematology/Oncology Research Summit is today from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m., room 201A in the Cullen Building, main Baylor. Open to residents, fellows and medical students to introduce research opportunities at the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Nov. 18 – 22: BCM Art Show

The annual BCM Art Show is next week, second floor lobby of the Alkek Building, main Baylor, featuring original artwork from members of the Baylor community. Online bidding is Nov. 18 at 7 a.m. through Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.; a representative from the Graduate School Council will be on site each day of the show from noon – 1 p.m. to answer bidding questions. Artists contribute at least 40 percent of their proceeds to the Arts in Medicine program at Texas Children's Hospital, and donations may also be made online during the bidding period. Nov. 19: Seasonal nutrition talk

Join registered dietitian Jennifer Cleveland and the BCM BeWell team Nov. 19 at noon in Cullen Auditorium for a discussion on seasonal nutritional concerns and tips on maintaining health goals through the holidays. Robertson nominations due Dec. 13

Nominations are being accepted for the 2020 Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson, Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education. The criteria and review process recently have been updated to select and reward the most outstanding educators at Baylor as they educate the next generation for medical research, education and care. Volunteer opportunity: Infant nutrition study

Researchers at the Children's Nutrition Research Center are seeking healthy infants 4 months old and younger for a study to determine if a quick skin reading can provide valuable information about what infants eat. Participation includes three in-person study visits to conduct skin readings, body measurements and infant food documentation, plus optional blood and breast milk samples. Volunteers will be compensated up to $180 in prepaid credit cards; free parking.
