Awards and Recognitions

Coverdale honored as teacher by AAMC

Dr. John Coverdale, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, received the Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award at the Association of American Medical Colleges annual meeting in Boston this week for his contributions to medical education. Coverdale has received more than 25 educational awards at Baylor and authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, many of which were co-authored with students and residents.

Faustinella named ACP fellow

Dr. Fabrizia Faustinella, associate professor of family and community medicine, has been elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Physicians in recognition of her personal integrity, superior competence in internal medicine, professional accomplishment and demonstrated scholarship.

Hotez honored with public service award

Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, will receive the 2017 Abraham White Public Service Award Nov. 16 at the fifth annual International Symposium on Thymosins in Health and Disease at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Hotez is being recognized for his significant contributions to the development of vaccines to treat neglected tropical diseases.

Nov. 14: Tacos with Teachers

The Center for Professionalism and Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion invite interested trainees and faculty to Tacos with Teachers with Dr. Laura A. Petersen, professor of medicine and director of the Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety (IQuest), on Tuesday, Nov. 14, from 7 to 8 a.m. in the IQuest conference room on the McGovern campus. The monthly program allows members of the Baylor community to meet with a faculty member for a discussion about their career path and tips to maintain connection and meaning in their work, followed by a Q&A. Space is limited to 15 participants; RSVP to InstitutionalDiversity@bcm.edu. Breakfast provided.

Nov. 15: Evenings with Genetics focuses on rare diseases

Evenings with Genetics will host “Partners in Progress: Families and Scientists Catalyze Research for Rare Diseases,” a panel discussion about forging partnerships to advance research and funding into rare diseases, Nov. 15 at the Children’s Museum. Panelists will include Dr. Brendan Lee, chair of molecular and human genetics at Baylor, and the directors of the National Urea Cycle Disorders Foundation, the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation and the Propionic Acidemia Foundation, and it will be moderated by Dr. Lindsay Burrage, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics at Baylor. Refreshments at 6:30 p.m., program starts at 7 p.m. The event is free but registration required.

Nov. 16: Panel talk on teamwork during a crisis

Teamwork in Crisis Management: Explore the essential elements of teamwork in the context of crisis management through the eyes of those who helped shepherd the College through Hurricane Harvey. Learn about specific tools to optimize team performance across a variety of situations. This panel discussion, hosted by Team Launch in collaboration with the Offices of the Provost and Communications, will be held on Thursday, Nov. 16, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in M323. Nov. 16: Professionalism in medicine talk

The Center for Professionalism in Medicine’s Profiles in Professionalism lecture series continues Thursday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m. in room 306A at main Baylor with Dr. David Chestnut, professor of anesthesiology and director of the division of obstetric anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He will discuss challenges in defining, teaching, encouraging and maintaining professionalism in the practice of medicine. CME credits will be offered. A reception will follow the talk.

Medical premium reduction deadline: Benefits-eligible employees enrolled in the Baylor medical plan who earn 16,000 BCM BeWell Vitality points by Nov. 30 will receive a 20 percent medical premium reduction (employee-only rate) for Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2018. Please be sure to complete your financial one-on-one consultations, biometric screening and other activities prior to the deadline to ensure your points are uploaded in time.
