Awards and Recognitions

Fasser honored for PA education career

Carl FasserCarl Fasser, P.A.-C., professor and former longtime director of the Physician Assistant Program in the School of Health Professions, received the Physician Assistant Education Association's Lifetime Achievement Award Oct. 26 at the association's annual conference in Anaheim, Calif. The most prestigious honor from the PAEA, the award recognizes a program faculty or staff member who has made extraordinary contributions to PA education over a sustained period. Also at the conference, Dr. Salim Virani, associate professor of medicine, received the Article of the Year Award for his Population Health Management publication, "Health Care Resource Utilization for Outpatient Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes Care Delivery among Advanced Practice Providers and Physician Providers in Primary Care."

Faustinella awarded by ACP

Dr. Fabrizia FaustinellaDr. Fabrizia Faustinella, associate professor of family and community medicine, will receive the American College of Physicians - Texas Chapter Laureate Award at the ACP chapter meeting in Austin later this month. The award honors internal medicine physicians who have demonstrated excellence in medical care, education, research and service to their communities.

Nelson leads ASHG meeting

Dr. David NelsonDr. David Nelson, professor of molecular and human genetics, presided over the 2018 annual meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics, held last month in San Diego. Nelson serves as president of the ASHG, the largest human genetics society in the world. His three-year term started in 2017 as president-elect and will conclude next year when he will serve as past president. His presidential address at the annual meeting can be viewed online.

Rosengart to lead surgical society

Dr. Todd RosengartDr. Todd Rosengart, chair and professor of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, was named the 2018 president of the Society of Surgical Chairs at the 2018 Society for Surgical Chairs annual meeting in late October in Boston. The society advances the academic surgery missions of administration, research, teaching and patient care and is a managed program of the American College of Surgeons.

Corporate Compliance and Ethics Week is Nov. 4 – 10. Staff from the Office of Compliance will visit Baylor locations throughout campus and the community to offer information, activities and prizes to increase awareness of College compliance policies and initiatives. See the full schedule.

Nov. 9 Memorial service for Dr. Shearer

A celebration of the life and career of Dr. William Shearer, longtime leader in pediatric immunology at Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital who passed away Oct. 9, will be held Nov. 9, 10 a.m. – noon, in the Feigin Tower first floor conference room.

Nov. 9: Hematology/oncology research summit

The inaugural Hematology/Oncology Research Summit is Nov. 9, 12:30 – 3 p.m., in the DeBakey Building at main Baylor, room M423. Open to anyone interested in hematology/oncology research, including hem/onc fellows, internal medicine residents and M.D. and Ph.D. students, with the goal of introducing trainees to research opportunities in the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center. Lunch provided; RSVP to hcruce@bcm.edu.

Share opinions through faculty and staff surveys

Faculty and staff are encouraged to share their opinions of BCM as a workplace in the Association of American Medical Colleges' engagement surveys. Results from the surveys will be used to enhance programs and policies at Baylor College of Medicine. Information gathered by the AAMC from Baylor and other institutions participating in the surveys also will be used to gain an understanding of the work environment at academic medical centers in general. There are separate surveys for faculty and staff; please check your email for a message from StandPointSurveys@aamc.org. For more information, visit the engagement survey websites for faculty and staff.

Genetic Counselor Awareness Day

Learn more about your partners in genetic healthcare and their training program in the School of Health Professions when you stop by the Genetic Counselor Awareness Day table, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in the E Hallway at main Baylor.

BCM BeWell premium reduction deadline

The deadline is Nov. 30 for benefits-eligible employees to earn the 18,000 BCM BeWell Vitality points needed to qualify for a 20 percent reduction on the 2019 medical premium (employee only rate).
