Klotman honored by Medical Bridges

Dr. Paul KlotmanDr. Paul Klotman, Baylor president, CEO and executive dean, was honored by Medical Bridges Inc. at the organization's annual fund-raising dinner, held Oct. 30 at Hotel ZaZa. Medical Bridges provides medical equipment and supplies to underserved communities and resource-poor settings. Klotman was honored for Baylor's commitment to global health; watch this video to see Baylor's global outreach in action.

Neilson receives research grant

Dr. Joel NeilsonDr. Joel Neilson, associate professor of molecular physiology and biophysics, has received a grant the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation for his project, "In vivo disruption of a novel translation pre-initiation complex as a putative therapeutic vulnerability for breast cancer differentiation therapy." The foundation awarded a total of $1.4 million in grants for groundbreaking research.

Samuel honored for research excellence

Dr. Melanie SamuelDr. Melanie Samuel, assistant professor of neuroscience and developmental biology and a CPRIT scholar, has earned Baylor College of Medicine's 7th annual Nancy Chang, Ph.D., Award for Research Excellence. Samuel, who is part of the Huffington Center on Aging, was selected for her project, "The molecular basis of neuronal susceptibility and resiliency in Kctd7 driven epilepsy."

TMC Orchestra concerts

The TMC Orchestra, which includes members of the Baylor community, presents "Dream of America," at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, and at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Miller Outdoor Theater. This performance includes "Overture to the Sea Hawk," "The Firebird Suite" and "Ellis Island: The Dream of America." Purchase tickets online for Hobby Center; Miller Outdoor Theater concert is free but tickets must be reserved for covered seating.

Nov. 4 – 8: Corporate Compliance & Ethics Week

Stop by Office of Compliance information tables to meet staff members, learn about important compliance and ethics topics, play compliance "Jeopardy" and earn prizes, and grab some goodies.

Transgender Awareness Week

The Baylor chapter of the Student National Medical Association and BCM Pride present two activities as part of Transgender Awareness Week. RSVP online.

  • Tuesday, Nov. 5, noon, Ben Taub Neuropsychiatry Center Auditorium, lunch and learn highlighting medical and mental healthcare of transwomen, particularly transwomen of color; lunch provided.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 6, 6 p.m., main Baylor room 201A, screening of the TV series "Pose," and a conversation on safety and support for transwomen; dinner provided.

Nov. 6-7: Graduate Student Symposium

The 31st annual Graduate Student Symposium is Nov. 6 – 7 in Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor Lounge. The event includes research presentations and poster sessions as well as the Joseph L. Melnick Distinguished Guest Speaker, Dr. Denise Montell, professor in molecular, cellular and developmental biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

'The Threads Among Us' presentation

Dr. Ellen FriedmanDr. Jordan ShapiroDr. Ellen Friedman, director of the Center for Professionalism at Baylor, and Dr. Jordan Shapiro, a gastroenterology fellow, participated in the 2019 Gold Humanism Summit, held Oct. 27 – 30 in Orlando, Fla., where they presented "The Threads Among Us," a grant-funded video project with companion curriculum that focuses on interprofessional empathy. They are available to present "The Threads Among Us" to department and faculty meetings; email ProfessionalismMatters@bcm.edu for information.

IT news: Jamf enrollment

All newly procured BCM Apple desktops and notebooks will be enrolled in the College's new Jamf technology toolset. This initiative of the Offices of Information Technology, Supply Chain Management and Compliance and Audit Services grants users access to a library of BCM-provided Mac apps and also provides enhanced security and compliance for enrolled Macs. Existing BCM Macs are not affected by this change at this time. Enrollment of existing devices will be part of a later project. Read more about Jamf enrollment.

BCM BeWell news

Grab a partner and join BCM BeWell Nov. 4 - 17, for the Healthy Selfie Challenge to show how you and your partner are practicing healthy habits. Individuals also can participate in the challenge. Commemorating Dia de los Muertos

Members of the Baylor community left photos and other mementos on the Dia de los Muertos display in the cafeteria at main Baylor. Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a festive and colorful Mexican annual tradition to remember family and loved ones who have died.
