Well-being resources at your fingertips!

How are you doing this week? BCM is offering an online self-assessment called the Well-Being Index (WBI). The WBI can be taken every 7 days and provides immediate individualized feedback and resources to support your well-being, especially important during the ongoing pandemic. Check out the Baylor Coping Card for the link to the WBI login page and your specific invitation code to sign up.

Got your flu shot? Time to attest!

Many of you already have gotten your flu shot and now it's time to complete your flu attestation. Make sure you attest by Nov. 30 to comply with BCM policy. And if you haven't gotten your flu shot yet, head to your local pharmacy or physician's office, or check the Occupational Health Program for on-campus flu shot dates – more will be added in November.


Awards and Recognitions

Hadidi earns oncology fellowship

Dr. Samer Al HadidiDr. Samer Al Hadidi, postdoctoral fellow in hematology and oncology, has been selected for the 2020-2021 class of FDA-AACR Oncology Educational Fellows. The fellows will work with experts at the FDA Oncology Center of Excellence to learn about oncology drug development and the regulatory review process.

Langley named to DNP leadership

Dr. Aimee LangleyDr. Aimee Langley, assistant professor of anesthesiology and health professions, was named associate director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program – Nurse Anesthesia, effective Jan. 1. A graduate of Baylor's DNP program, Langley has served as course director and simulation coordinator for the program. She is an accomplished educator, a clinician at Ben Taub Hospital and a faculty senator. She will join Dr. Megan Bullerwell, associate director, as part of the DNP leadership team.

Shah honored for career achievements

Dr. Asim ShahDr. Asim Shah was honored by the Pakistan Psychiatric Society as Eminent Pakistani Psychiatrist 2020. The society cited "His 25 years of meritorious achievements in teaching and training, remarkable expertise in community and disaster psychiatry and outstanding services in public and media engagement for promotion of mental health globally." Shah is executive vice chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Baylor and chief of psychiatry at Ben Taub Hospital.

Wolf named UTMB Distinguished Alumnus

Dr. John WolfDr. John Wolf, chair and professor of dermatology, has received a 2020 Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston where he earned a master's degree in anatomy and a medical degree in 1965. He also has previously received distinguished alumnus honors from Lamar High School and Rice University, where he was a history major and championship debater, driving his interest in medical humanities.

BCM's world ranking

The College ranks 132nd in the world in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities. Among Baylor's subject rankings in the top 20 are Molecular Biology & Genetics (13), Gastroenterology & Hepatology (18) and Cell Biology (20). U.S. News looked at indicators such as publications, total citations and global reputation in ranking the top 1,500 out of 12,746 universities worldwide.

White Coat Ceremony

Join the live stream of the virtual White Coat Ceremony for first-year medical students tonight at 6 p.m. The event will highlight the significance of the white coat and the excellence in patient care that it represents.

Early voting ends today

Early voting for the upcoming election ends today at 7 p.m. Harris County voters can cast their ballots conveniently in the Texas Medical Center at the John P. McGovern Commons, 6550 Bertner Ave. Remember to bring an approved ID and face masks. Find area-wide voting information on the BCM intranet.

Grand Rounds: Sexual harassment in academia

"Addressing Sexual Harassment in Academic Science, Engineering and Medicine," part of Health Equity Grand Rounds, will be presented Nov. 12 from noon - 1 p.m. by Dr. Frazier Benya, senior program officer at the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine. She will provide an overview of the 2018 report on the climate for women in these academic fields and discuss how institutions are responding. Register by Nov. 10 at 5 p.m. Sponsored by the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity, Baylor's Group on Women in Medicine and Science and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Walk for important causes!

It's fall, y'all, and that means walking for good causes!

  • On Nov. 14, join a Baylor team for the Walk to End Alzheimer's and Get Your Rear in Gear. Both races are virtual and can be completed on your own time, in your own neighborhood. Help raise important funds for research, care and support for Alzheimer's disease and colorectal cancer.
  • From Nov. 20 to Dec. 20, complete the 2020 virtual Alex's 5K Run/Walk & Kids' K, supporting autism organizations in memory of Alex Jamrich, the son of BCM faculty member Milan Jamrich. This marks the 10th anniversary of the event.

College News

Nominations open

Make your voice heard on an institutional committee. Nominations are open for new faculty members on the Environmental Safety Committee, Institutional Policy Committee and Research Conflict of Interest Committee through Thursday, Nov. 12. This is an opportunity for you to gain collaboration skills and log service hours for your performance review and C.V. while participating in the civic life of the College. Volunteers needed for childhood obesity study

Children and teenagers with a diagnosis of combined dyslipidemia of obesity are needed to participate in the Pediatric Heart Network DO IT! Trial at Baylor and Texas Children's. The research study will find out if the drug pitavastatin, which is used to lower blood cholesterol levels, can improve artery health in children and teens who are overweight with abnormal levels of blood lipids. The study lasts two years and involves seven visits to TCH. Those visits may include physical exams, blood draws and urine samples and vascular measures by ultrasound. TMC Library hours

The TMC Library hours are changing to 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. starting Monday, Nov. 2. In addition, the library will reopen on weekends starting Nov. 7. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Sunday, 1 – 8 p.m. Hours may be adjusted as needed for the student finals period.
