Awards and Recognitions

Bottazzi among Women in Science with Excellence

Dr. Maria Elena BottazziDr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, professor and associate dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor, has been selected as one of BioHouston's 2019 Women in Science with Excellence (WISE) honorees. She is one of four women being recognized for their distinguished careers in STEM-related fields. Bottazzi and her fellow awardees will be honored at the 10th annual WISE Luncheon at River Oaks Country Club in January.

Kan awarded for brain tumor research

Dr. Peter KanDr. Peter Kan, associate professor of neurosurgery and director of cerebrovascular surgery, was awarded funding from the Roderick D. MacDonald Research Fund at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center for his research project to test intra-arterial therapy for brain cancer in a human brain tumor model. This work is being done in collaboration with Dr. Frederick Lang's lab at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Ross to lead state podiatric group

Dr. Jeffrey RossDr. Jeffrey A. Ross, associate professor of surgery in the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, was elected as president of the Texas Podiatric Medical Association at the 101st Texas Podiatric Medical Association annual meeting in Galveston earlier this month.

DeBakey named a top high school

The Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions in Houston Independent School District has been designated an Exemplary High Performing School in the 2018 National Blue Ribbon Schools Program by U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. It is one of 349 schools in the nation and 24 from Texas to be recognized in 2018. DeBakey High School is a magnet school of the Houston Independent School District, in partnership with Baylor College of Medicine.

Oct. 30: Cybersecurity threats

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month ends with a presentation by the FBI's Houston Cyber Task Force and Palo Alto Networks, a global cybersecurity company, on the latest threats and who's behind them, noon – 1 p.m., Cullen Auditorium.

Nov. 8 events: Precision medicine and Alzheimer's talks

-The inaugural Baylor College of Medicine and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center Precision Medicine Grand Rounds with Dr. Anantha Shekhar, distinguished professor at Indiana University School of Medicine and expert in the field of precision medicine, is Nov. 8, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. in the Denton A. Cooley Auditorium at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center. He will speak on "Integrating Precision Medicine into Clinical Practice: Rewards and Challenges."
-The annual Update on Alzheimer's lecture is Nov. 8 in Cullen Auditorium. Dr. Joseph Kass and Dr. Melissa Yu, director and associate director of the Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorder Center, respectively, will discuss the latest in Alzheimer's disease research and treatment. The event is free and open to the public. Registration starts at 6:30 p.m.; lecture begins at 7 p.m.

Mosaic update: Concur training

A new way for all employees to get reimbursed for travel and non-travel business expenses will be implemented on Nov. 5 with the official launch of Concur. This web and mobile-enabled tool will handle travel requests, travel booking, travel and non-travel expense reimbursement and procurement card reconciliation. New and revised policies

The BCM Board of Trustees approved several new and revised policies on Sept. 26, 2018, including: 23.1.11 - Credit Hour Policy; 21.1.07 – International Activities: Anti-Bribery Policy; 20.0.02 – Open Research and Publication Policy; 12.2.03 – Network and Security Incident Response Policy; 12.1.14 – Data Security Procedure; 12.1.05 – Wireless Network Usage Policy.
