Bottazzi inducted into Honduras science academy

Dr. Maria Elena BottazziDr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, professor and associate dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor, was inducted into the National Academy of Science of Honduras at a ceremony last month in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Her plenary presentation, "Immunizations against Neglected Tropical Diseases," highlighted the advances in vaccine development at Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and the importance of inter-academy activities.

Garay receives Presidential honor for teaching

Lollie GarayDolores "Lollie" Garay, instructor in Baylor’s School of Health Professions and the Center for Educational Outreach, is a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Science Foundation. This is the highest award given by the U.S. government to K-12 teachers of math and science. Garay is being honored for her 30-plus year career at the Redd School.

McLaughlin named ASAHP fellow

Dr. Robert McLaughlinDr. Robert McLaughlin, dean of Baylor's School of Health Professions, was named a Fellow of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions at the organization's annual conference last week in Charleston, S.C. The fellow designation recognizes McLaughlin's leadership and contributions in allied health.

Oct. 28 – 29: Rett syndrome symposium

The Rett Syndrome Symposium and Workshop, marking the 20th anniversary of the discovery of the genetic basis of Rett syndrome by Dr. Huda Zoghbi, will be held Oct. 28-29 at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute. The event will bring together investigators from around the world to address key issues with an eye toward advancing therapies. See the full agenda and register.

Oct. 30: Blood Drive

Commit to life at a blood drive for the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, Wednesday, Oct. 30, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Everyone who donates will receive a free T-shirt with Astros colors. Sign up online to donate, or just drop by.

Oct. 30: Cyber security info

This National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, learn important information at the Cyber Strong Security Panel Discussion, Wednesday, Oct. 30, noon – 1 p.m., Cullen Auditorium. Moderated by Randy Langenderfer, chief compliance/audit officer with panelists Lee Leiber, Jeff Pounds, Kim Andrews and representatives from the FBI. Earn 50 BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Register early: TAMEST 2020 Conference

The Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas, TAMEST, will host its 2020 annual conference Jan. 7-9 in Dallas, bringing together Texas' top scientists, business leaders and venture capitalists to explore how to turn research into new technologies, products and companies. Register online by Oct. 31 for early bird pricing.

Walk for a good cause!

  • Walk to Defeat ALS on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the University of Houston Lynn Eusan Park, with the Baylor ALS Clinic Team.
  • 9th annual Alex's 5K Run/Walk and Kids' 1K, supporting autism-related charities in memory of Alex Jamrich, son of Baylor faculty member Milan Jamrich, Nov. 2, MacGregor Park, sign up online.
  • Walk to End Alzheimer's, Nov. 2, University Houston Lynn Eusan Park with the Baylor Memory Walkers team and Dr. Mark Kunik to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Association, which supports patients and funds dementia research, including grants to Baylor.

Apply for healthcare improvement course

Baylor's Institute for Continuing Professional Development for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety is now accepting applications for its Leading Healthcare Improvement Advanced Training Course to be held in spring 2020 with the goal of developing leaders of interprofessional teams to guide improvements in the clinical setting. Early voting

Early voting for the Nov. 5 general election is going on now through Nov. 1. A full list of voting centers and early voting locations can be found online for Harris, Brazoria and Fort Bend counties.
