Don't give in to 'pandemic' fatigue

From Halloween to New Year's Day, it's basically one big long holiday. In a normal year, this would mean lots of gatherings of family and friends. The temptation is there to spend these occasions as you usually would, but don't give in to pandemic fatigue. Read these tips for a safe and healthy Halloween, and this note from Dr. James McDeavitt on creating your holiday bubble. Stay positive, test negative!


Awards and Recognitions

Fisher honored by women's chamber

Dr. Joslyn FisherDr. Joslyn Fisher, associate professor of medicine, is the 2020 recipient of the Kathryn S. Stream, Ph.D., Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Women's Health from the Greater Houston Women's Chamber of Commerce. She is being honored for her work on behalf of women and in recognition of her frontline heroism in the global pandemic. The award was presented earlier this month at the organization's annual conference. In addition, Fisher recently was selected to serve as the general internal medicine pavilion chief at Ben Taub Hospital.

Kirk recognized in photomicrography contest

Jason Kirk, technical director of the Optical Imaging and Vital Microscopy Core, was recognized in the Nikon Small World 2020 Photomicrography Competition, where his images earned 7th place and 9th place. His 7th place image, shown above, shows microtubules in orange inside a cell with the nucleus shown in cyan. Kirk and Baylor postdoc Dr. Melinda Engevik also had images earn Image of Distinction. Ho elected to NAM

Dr. Vivian HoDr. Vivian Ho, health economist at Rice University and Baylor, was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in recognition of outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. Ho is professor of medicine – health sciences research at Baylor and James A. Baker III Institute Chair in Health Economics at Rice. Congratulations to Ho on earning one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine. Read more in this Rice University press release.

Zobeck earns SIOP Young Investigator Award

Dr. Mark ZobeckDr. Mark Zobeck, instructor in the Department of Pediatrics, section of hematology/oncology, received the 2020 Young Investigator Award from the International Society of Paediatric Oncology for his study called "Novel Risk Factors for Glucarparidise Use in Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL): Hispanic Ethnicity, Age, and the ABCC4 Gene."

Oncology grand rounds

Hematology/Oncology Grand Rounds presents "Breast Cancer Treatment in Black Women, Differences or Disparities," with Shahnjayla Connors, assistant professor of health and behavioral science, UH Downtown, Friday, Oct. 23, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Attend via Zoom (Password: 831342).

Blood drive

Baylor will host its next Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center blood drive on Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the BCM gym on the 8th floor of the Garage 6. Appointments required due to physical distancing.

Got art? Submit for annual show

The Oct. 30 deadline is approaching to submit artwork for the annual BCM Charity Art Show. This may include paintings, photography, textiles, pottery, jewelry and crafts and more. The event will be held virtually Nov. 16 – 20. Forty percent of proceeds benefit the Arts in Medicine Program at Texas Children's Hospital and remaining profits go directly to artists. 'Socktober' continues!

Morrison Café on the main Baylor campus hosts 'Socktober,' a donation drive benefiting Star of Hope, through the end of month. Drop off new socks for men, women and children in the marked bin in the cafeteria!

Postdoctoral research recruitment program

Are you planning to hire a research postdoctoral associate next year? The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs sponsors the Postdoctoral Research Opportunities in Science (PROS) program to recruit top senior graduate students from around the nation. A virtual event will be held in April where graduate students can meet with faculty, network with peers and learn about BCM and Houston. Nominations open for alumni awards

Nominations are being accepted for the annual Baylor College of Medicine Alumni Awards. These awards recognize alumni who have made significant contributions to the field of medicine, such as seminal scientific discoveries, distinguished academic accomplishments and exceptional patient care, including work with the underserved. Alumni awards are a great way to celebrate your peers. Nominate online by Nov. 13. The virtual award ceremony will be held on April 14, 2021.
