Celebrating Hispanic culture

Hispanic Heritage Celebration

Student groups, with the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a campus gathering last Friday, Oct. 15, offering food and interactive activities.

Student appeals and grievances

The Student Appeals and Grievances Policy (23.1.08) is administered with oversight from the Office of the Provost to ensure documentation, centralized tracking and prompt, fair resolution of issues reported by learners at all locations, including those who receive remote instruction. Domestic Violence Awareness

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Cases of domestic/intimate partner violence have increased during the pandemic. Learn what you can do to help on Baylor's Intimate Partner Violence webpage, the Houston Area Women's Center and the Texas Council on Family Violence.

During Medical Assistant Recognition Week, Baylor would like to thank these health professionals for their dedication to providing excellent patient care. MAs perform important services, like taking vital signs, checking height and weight, asking questions about symptoms and health and passing this information along to physicians and other providers.

Volunteers needed: Nutrition and bone health study

Baylor's Children Nutrition Research Center is recruiting children ages 12- to 18-years old who are normal weight or overweight, with and without type 2 diabetes, to evaluate how nutrition and weight affect bone health and risk for vessel disease starting in childhood. Physician Health & Wellness Exchange

The Texas Medical Association will host its Physician Health and Wellness Exchange Saturday, Oct. 23. The inaugural event in 2019 resulted in an expansion of wellness offerings in the TMA, of which Baylor Associate Provost Dr. Toi Harris serves as vice chair. Register for the event to explore how to build a culture of wellness for physicians, trainees, faculty and staff; CME available. Two BCM groups will present posters: "BCM’s Wellness 5K Over the Years: Continuity of Health and Wellness Initiatives during a Global Pandemic," Brianna Etoria and Suzette Roldan; and "Baylor College of Medicine COVID-19 Support Task Force: How the Community and Baylor Came Together to Care for Frontline Workers During the Pandemic," Dr. Peggy H. Yang, Jesse Gavin and Katherine Holtman.

Mental health webinar

Learn about common mental health concerns among children, teens and adults and how to address them in a webinar on Oct. 25 from noon – 1 p.m., presented by Baylor faculty in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Register here or contact Ashley Siverand at Siverand@bcm.edu.

Event to celebrate TMC Heroes!

BCM employees working on the frontlines across all our mission areas during the COVID-19 pandemic are invited to the TMC Heroes Celebration, Wednesday, Oct. 27, 3 – 5 p.m. Join the event on the TMC Commons lawn for burgers, a pumpkin patch and carving, Cirque du Soleil showcase, and more.

CVRI talk on cardiac protein signaling

Baylor's Cardiovascular Research Institute hosts Dr. Patrick Osei-Owusu of Case Western Reserve University as its next seminar series speaker, Oct. 27, noon – 1 p.m. He will speak on "Novel Insights into the Regulation of Cardiac G Protein Signaling by Multiple RGS Proteins." Panel discussion: Breast cancer awareness & risk

The Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center is hosting a virtual Breast Cancer Awareness and Risk Prevention discussion on Thursday, Oct. 28, at 5:30 p.m. Breast imaging radiologist Dr. Quan Nguyen, medical oncologist Dr. Julie Nangia and genetic counselor Georgiann Garza will join the panel, along with a representative from the American Cancer Society. UH-BCM research symposium

Join the third UH-BCM Virtual Symposium, Friday, Oct. 29, 2 – 4:30 p.m. The event will feature short presentations from the nine research groups that received Collaborative Pilot Grants last summer from the University of Houston and Baylor College of Medicine. BCM and UH vice presidents of research, Dr. Mary Dickinson and Dr. Amr Elnashai, will provide opening remarks, followed by 15-minute presentations from each group. See agenda and register.


Awards and Recognitions

Caskey honored by ASHG

Dr. Thomas CaskeyDr. C. Thomas Caskey, professor of molecular and human genetics, was awarded the William Allan Award by the American Society of Human Genetics. The award recognizes substantial and far-reaching scientific contributions to human genetics and was presented this week at the ASHG Virtual Meeting. Heslop elected to NAM

Dr. Helen HeslopDr. Helen Heslop, director of the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy at Baylor, Texas Children's Hospital and Houston Methodist Hospital and interim director of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center at Baylor, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Election to the National Academy of Medicine is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.
