Awards and Recognitions

Kalavar honored for PA support

Dr. J. KalavarDr. J. Kalavar, associate professor of medicine and chief of staff of the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, accepted the national Physician Assistant Education Association Partnership Award in recognition of the MEDVAMC's decades of support for the Baylor College of Medicine PA Program, its students and faculty. Kathy Erdman, PA Program director, and Dr. Bob McLaughlin, dean of the School of Health Professions, presented the award at Academic Council Monday.

Zoorob named journal president

Dr. Roger ZoorobDr. Roger Zoorob, chair and professor of family and community medicine, was elected to a two-year term as president of the Board of Directors of the Annals of Family Medicine at its recent meeting at the American Academy of Family Physician in Kansas City. The Annals of Family Medicine, the most prestigious research journal for the specialty, is a collaborative effort and funded by seven family medicine organizations with no commercial support.

Faculty earn AAP Awards

Dr. Fernando SteinDr. Susan TorreyDr. Fernando Stein, professor of pediatrics at Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital, was announced as the recipient of the Distinguished Career Award from the American Association of Pediatrics. Stein, a past president of AAP, is a critical care pediatrician and serves as medical director of the progressive care unit at Texas Children's. Dr. Susan Torrey, associate professor of pediatrics – emergency medicine, is the recipient of the Michael Shannon Humanitarian Award. She is associate director of the education division of the Global Hematology-Oncology Pediatric Excellence Program, or Global HOPE, which develops pediatric hematology and oncology services and resources in Africa.

Oct. 19: Autism Speaks Walk

The Houston Autism Speaks Walk is Saturday, Oct. 19, 9 a.m. at Lynn Eusan Park at the University of Houston. Support autism research, resources and services by joining or donating to the Texas Children's and Baylor team.

Oct. 24: DocTalk on McNair campus

Dr. Alastair Thompson, professor of surgery and co-director of the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, will discuss the latest advances and practices in breast cancer surgery, Thursday, Oct. 24, noon - 1 p.m. at Baylor Medical Center on the McNair Campus, conference room B. Eligible employees who attend will earn BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Nov. 2: Annual Acute Hematologic Malignancies Symposium

The annual Acute Hematologic Malignancies Symposium is Nov. 2 in room M112 at main Baylor, bringing together national and international speakers to address recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myelogenous leukemia. Designed for hematologists, oncologists, registered nurses, physician assistants, basic scientists and trainees, and presented by the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center. HR news: Important deadlines

  • The 2020 Benefits Open Enrollment period ends Monday, Oct. 21. Changes or elections made during the Open Enrollment period will be effective Jan. 1, 2020. Get last minute help from HR reps today and Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in room 018D in the basement of the Jewish Institute Building or watch an Open Enrollment presentation online. Questions?   • Benefits-eligible employees and their spouses/domestic partners enrolled in the Baylor medical plan who earn the required BCM BeWell Vitality points by Nov. 30, 2019, will receive a medical premium reduction for 2020. Be sure to complete activities such as financial one-on-ones, biometric screening and athletic events prior to the deadline to ensure your points are uploaded in time. Calling all artists!

Baylor artists are invited to submit their paintings, drawings, photography, pottery and other artwork for the annual Baylor Art Show, set for Nov. 18 – 22 in the Alkek Building at main Baylor. At least 40% of the sales will benefit the Arts in Medicine Program at Texas Children's Hospital, with the remainder going directly to the artists. Submit your art for the event by contacting Nate Achilly before Oct. 31.
