Friedman delivers endowed otolaryngology lecture

Dr. Ellen FriedmanDr. Ellen Friedman, professor of otolaryngology and director of the Center for Professionalism, delivered the Cotton-Fitton Endowed Lecture in Pediatric Otolaryngology at the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation Annual Meeting & Otolaryngology Experience. Her talk, "What You See Depends on Where You Stand," was a discussion of gender issues in otolaryngology.

Fu receives National Eye Institute grant

Dr. Yingbin FuAn international team led by Dr. Yingbin Fu, Sarah Campbell Blaffer Endowed Chair and associate professor of ophthalmology, received a five-year, more than $4 million grant from the National Eye Institute's Audacious Goals Initiative to advance regenerative cell replacement therapy for blinding eye diseases. It is part of an NEI effort to push the boundaries of vision science and restore vision through regeneration of the retina.

Lupo elected to COG committee

Dr. Philip LupoDr. Philip Lupo, associate professor of pediatric hematology and oncology, recently was elected to the Children's Oncology Group Nominating Committee as one of the four members representing the non-hematology/oncology disciplines. COG is a National Cancer Institute-supported clinical trials group and is the world's largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research.

Osborne among Men of Distinction honorees

Dr. Kent OsborneDr. C. Kent Osborne, professor and founding director of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center and Dudley and Tina Sharp Chair for Cancer Research, was honored at this year's Men of Distinction luncheon. The event benefits medical research and treatment for children and pays tribute to men in the Houston community who have distinguished themselves through leadership.

Preventza serves as journal guest editor

Dr. Ourania PreventzaDr. Ourania Preventza, professor of surgery, served as the guest editor of the journal Annals of Cardiothoracic Surgery for its focus issue on transcatheter valve-in-valve. The issue includes keynote lectures, featured articles, operative techniques, editorials and videos. The focus issue currently is available online.

Rouce joins Be The Match board

Dr. Rayne RouceDr. Rayne Rouce, assistant professor of pediatric hematology and oncology, was invited to join the Board of Directors of Be The Match, a global leader in bone marrow transplantation for patients with life-threatening blood cancers.

 


Events

Hispanic Heritage Block Party

Join the Hispanic Heritage Block Party, today, Oct. 15, from 4 – 6 p.m. in the main Baylor courtyard, featuring food, music, prizes and games. The event closes out Hispanic Heritage Month at BCM and is hosted by Hispanic Women in Science, Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science, and the Association for Graduate Student Diversity. Learners only: Free tickets for reading series

Medical, graduate and health professions students, residents and fellows are invited to an Inprint reading by Zoom for free, first-come, first-served, where prominent writers read and discuss their new books with another writer. Upcoming events include Oct. 18, with author Anthony Doerr and his new novel, "Cloud Cuckoo Land," and Oct. 25 featuring Jonathan Franzen discussing his new novel "Crossroads,” 7 – 8 p.m. for both. Offered by the Narrative Medicine Program at Baylor's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy and Inprint, through a grant from the Association of American Medical Colleges. National Cybersecurity Awareness Month webinar

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Join a Zoom webinar on healthcare cyber threats on Oct. 20 from noon to 1 p.m. An FBI special agent will explain best practices to avoid becoming a victim. Click here to register. Primary Care Update

The Department of Family and Community Medicine presents its daylong Primary Care Update by Zoom, Oct. 23, offering up to seven hours of CME. Topics include management of diabetes, care of the incarcerated, heart failure management, mental health and much more. See the full agenda and register.

Calling all artists!

Art submissions, including paintings, drawings, photography, crafts and jewelry, are being accepted for the 20th annual BCM Art Show, which will be held virtually Nov. 15 – 19. Forty percent of the proceeds go to the Texas Children's Hospital Periwinkle Arts in Medicine program, with the remaining portion going to the artists. Complete the submission form by Oct. 29.

Join walk for Down syndrome

Join BCM colleagues on Cami's Crew for the Houston Buddy Walk for Down Syndrome, Nov. 6, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Constellation Field in Sugar Land. Cami's Crew shows support for the daughter of BCM employee Becky Finley and the more than 400,000 other individuals with Down syndrome in the U.S. Join or donate online.

Review information to make important benefit decisions during the 2022 Open Enrollment period, then complete Open Enrollment through Employee Self-Service.
  • Learning G.P.S. is the new online learning system for paid faculty and staff. This month's highlighted course is Workplace Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Action. This course focuses on what diversity is, how to leverage the diversity within the organization, and the barriers that must be overcome to create a diversified working environment.   • Attention managers: The 2021 Staff Performance Evaluation deadline is Oct. 31. Complete evaluation forms, hold employee discussions, and finish all SuccessFactors signature steps by this date. Additionally, Nov. 30 is the manager deadline to discuss goals with employees and complete SF data entry (use PY2022 Staff Goal Plan Form).
