Awards and Recognitions

Shah named to new role in psychiatry

Dr. Asim ShahDr. Asim Shah, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, was appointed as the department's inaugural vice chair for community psychiatry. Shah is currently chief of psychiatry for Ben Taub Hospital/Harris Health System and the director of community behavioral health program for Harris Health System. His service is the largest outpatient mental health provider in Harris County, with more than 100,000 visits a year. In his new role, Shah will assist and advise Dr. Wayne Goodman, department chair, in the further development of community psychiatry.

Shook honored by pediatrics group

Dr. Joan ShookDr. Joan Shook, professor of pediatrics – emergency medicine, will receive the 2016 Jim Seidel Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Emergency Medicine at the AAP National Conference Oct. 22 in San Francisco. The award recognizes members who have provided exceptional service to the section and to the field of pediatric emergency care.

NIH awards to Wang and Samuel

Dr. Meng WangDr. Melanie SamuelTwo Baylor researchers have received awards from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Meng Wang, associate professor in the Huffington Center on Aging and the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics, received the NIH Pioneer Award. The award will support Wang's work in identifying new strategies to improve human health and longevity. Dr. Melanie Samuel, assistant professor in the Huffington Center on Aging and the Department of Neuroscience, has been awarded the NIH New Innovator Award through its High-Risk, High-Reward Research program to further support her research, which focuses on understanding the processes that lead to cognitive dysfunction.

Compassion and the Art of Medicine Oct. 14 and Oct. 21

The Compassion and the Art of Medicine talk on Oct. 14 will feature Margarita Arentsen-Landgren, a social worker who serves homeless men, women and children through Harris Health's Healthcare for the Homeless program. Actress Megan Cole, who starred in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play "WIT" and who gives workshops to end-of-life care facilities on the human face of medicine, will speak Oct. 21. Both talks are at 12:10 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium.

Enhance your career with teamwork skills at Oct. 17 master class

The first Team Launch Master Class will be "Touch the Future" presented by Dr. Jonathan Clark, associate professor of neurology at Baylor, Oct. 17, 5 to 6 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Reception at 4:30 p.m. in the courtyard with Dr. Clarke and Team Launch leadership. Master Classes are a unique opportunity for everyone at the College to learn skills needed to work successfully in teams. This class will help you learn to be a good leader and follower and to learn from mistakes. Advanced registration is recommended, but not required.

Hotez to sign new book Oct. 18

Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, will sign copies of his new book, "Blue Marble Health: An Innovative Plan to Fight Diseases of the Poor Amid Wealth," Oct. 18, starting at 7 p.m. at Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet St., 77005.

Open enrollment meetings and assistance

Attend an Open Enrollment meeting to review changes for 2017 benefits. Eligible employees will receive 150 BCM BeWell Vitality points for attending an in-person meeting. Can't attend in person? Log in and listen from anywhere to livestream Zoom sessions on Friday, Oct. 14, or Thursday, Oct. 20, from 1 to 2 p.m. The benefits office also will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the main Baylor campus, Room O18D (Jewish Building basement) for in-person assistance. Join the student-organized Wellness 5K Oct. 22

The 2016 BCM Wellness 5K and Kids 1K event will be held Saturday, Oct. 22, at 8 a.m. This student-organized event benefits the Student Wellness Program and other healthy initiatives. Check-in is at the TMC Commons and the race starts in front of Baylor's Cullen building. This is a timed event, and runners can join as individuals or teams. There are lots of fun race-day activities, and there is even child care for participants who want to bring their youngsters. Register online.

Perinatal nursing symposium Oct. 28

The Baylor Perinatal Outreach Program will host its 40th annual nursing symposium Oct. 28 at the Hilton Hotel on the University of Houston campus. The goal of the symposium is to enable registered nurses to incorporate current issues related to prenatal, perinatal and postnatal care into practice. Continuing education hours available. It is jointly sponsored by Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital. Find more information and register online.

Join Alex's 5k Nov. 5 to support autism programs

Alex's 5K Run/Walk and Kids' K is Nov. 5 t MacGregor Park. This annual fun run raises money for Autism Speaks and Avondale House in memory of Alex Jamrich, son of Baylor faculty member Milan Jamrich. The family-friendly event includes a postrace party and lots of kids' activities, including cupcake decorating. Find more information and register online.

It's almost time for the annual Graduate Student Council Art Show, set for Nov. 7 – 11. Art submitted by the Baylor community is displayed and put up for auction, with 40 percent of proceeds benefiting the Arts in Medicine program at Texas Children's Cancer Center. Submissions of art, including paintings, photography, crafts and jewelry, are being accepted for the show until 5 p.m. Oct. 21. Find more information online or email anwebb@bcm.edu.
