Gaber earns mentorship award

Dr. M. Waleed Gaber, associate professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology at Baylor and Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers, received the Scholar-in-Training Excellence in Mentorship Award from the Radiation Research Society. This award honors an individual who has provided exceptional mentoring in both professional and personal aspirations.

Guillory honored as advocate for children

Dr. Charleta Guillory, associate professor of pediatrics and director of the Neonatal-Perinatal Public Health Program at Texas Children's Hospital, received the Texas Pediatric Society Sidney R. Kaliski Award of Merit at the society's annual meeting last month in San Antonio. This award recognizes a Texas Pediatric Society member who has served as an advocate for children and made a substantial contribution to the health and welfare of the children of Texas and to the organization.

Persse awarded for contributions to emergency medicine

Dr. David Persse, professor of emergency medicine at Baylor and medical director for the city of Houston, received the American College of Emergency Physician's 2018 Outstanding Contribution to EMS award at the organization's annual meeting last week in San Diego. As the city's public health authority, Persse is responsible for the medical aspects of clinical care, quality management, disease control and public health preparedness. He played an important role in the response following Hurricane Harvey.

Yalamanchili earns Zoghbi Scholar Award

Baylor postdoctoral associate Dr. Hari Krishna Yalamanchili received the 2018 NRI Zoghbi Scholar Award, a special fund established by Dr. Huda Zoghbi, professor at Baylor and director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's, to honor the trainees who have worked in her laboratory and to foster the next generation of successful scientists. Yalamanchili's proposal was titled, "Decoding Cryptic Splicing in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Driving Disease Gene Discovery." He was presented a certificate and plaque by Dr. Zoghbi on Oct. 9 at the NRI. Learn more about the award.

Oct. 15: Rett Syndrome awareness event

To commemorate Rett Syndrome Awareness Month in October, the Blue Bird Circle Rett Center at Baylor, in association with Texas Children's Hospital, is participating in the Ride Across America event. Stop by the auxiliary Bridge at Texas Children's (third floor bridge between West Tower and the Mark Wallace Tower) Monday, Oct. 15, between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to learn more about Rett Syndrome and related disorders from patients and families and from physicians and other healthcare providers.

Oct. 15-16: Lectures on medical school teaching

The Claire Huckins Medical Education Lectureship Series presents three talks next week by Dr. Aviad "Adi" Haramati, founding director for Innovation and Leadership in Education and co-director of the Graduate Program in Complementary and Alternative Medicine at Georgetown University. All talks in Cullen Auditorium.
-Monday, Oct. 15, 5 p.m., "Teaching Science in Medical School in the 21st Century"
-Tuesday, Oct. 16, 9 a.m., "Educating the Educators through CENTILE: A Mandate for Every Medical Center," and at noon, "Managing Stress, Building Resilience: The Imperative for Self-care in the Training of Health Professionals"

Oct. 18: Professionalism lecture with Shanafelt

The Center for Professionalism welcomes Dr. Tait Shanafelt, chief wellness officer and associate dean at the Stanford School of Medicine, Thursday, Oct. 18, at 12:15 and 4 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium, for a presentation on "Finding Meaning, Balance and Personal Satisfaction in the Practice of Medicine." Open to all; benefits-eligible employees can receive 200 BCM BeWell Vitality points for attending one of the sessions.

Oct. 18: Artificial intelligence in medicine 'Think Tank'

Baylor's Interdisciplinary Surgical Technology and Innovation Center, or INSTINCT, will host Think Tank: Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, Thursday, Oct. 18, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Jaworski Classroom at main Baylor. The event will offer a discussion on innovative and game-changing ideas in relation to artificial intelligence in healthcare with guest speaker Jim Havelka, CEO of InformAI. Register online.

Oct. 19: Baylor apparel and gourmet snacks for sale

Get a head start on holiday shopping and department gift-giving at an on-site sale next Friday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge, including Baylor apparel and, for the first time, Baylor-branded gourmet snack tins and gift sets.

Oct. 20: TMC Orchestra performance

The TMC Orchestra, which features several members of the Baylor community, will perform Saturday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Hobby Center for Performing Arts. The program will feature compositions by Aaron Copland, Antonio Vivaldi, Leonard Bernstein and Beethoven. Buy tickets online.

Nov. 3: Hematologic Malignancies Symposium

Registration is open for the Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center Hematologic Malignancies Symposium, Saturday, Nov. 3, noon to 4 p.m., including poster sessions and presentations by Baylor and national experts. Successful Diversity Week

Diversity and Inclusion Week at Baylor capped off with a College-wide service project last Friday, pictured here, where the snack items donated by the Baylor community were assembled into packs for Houston's homeless population. Thanks to all who donated and volunteered! The Baylor family also had the opportunity to show what diversity and inclusion means to them – watch a highlight video here.

Open Enrollment for 2019 continues through Oct. 22. Learn more about benefits plans and options at an information session, and earn BeWell Vitality points for attending. What to do after getting your flu shot

Hundreds of Baylor employees and trainees have already received a flu shot. Don't forget to complete the online form to verify you have gotten your flu vaccination. Haven't received the flu vaccine yet? Check the OHP calendar of flu shot events across campus, or get vaccinated at your own healthcare provider or local pharmacy. Check out this video for instructions on completing your flu vaccine verification.

Relationship violence awareness

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Baylor is showing support by encouraging all community members to participate in Wear Purple Day on Thursday, Oct. 18, to acknowledge the more than 100 Texans who lose their lives to relationship violence each year. Learn what you can do to help on Baylor's intimate partner violence webpage, the Houston Area Women's Center and the Texas Council on Family Violence.
