Bottazzi honored by Honduran congress

Dr. Maria Elena BottazziDr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, professor of pediatrics and associate dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, was recognized by the National Congress of Honduras for her outstanding academic work and scientific research in the field of tropical medicine. She was honored with a gold medal at a special ceremony in Honduras on Sept. 20.

Campbell to lead program coordinator group

Frances CampbellFrances Campbell, executive coordinator for the chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at Baylor, has been named chair of the Otolaryngology Program Coordinators Organization. She will lead the ninth annual meeting of the organization in November in Chicago, where attendees will address the responsibilities, challenges and goals of residency program coordinators. Campbell has worked at Baylor since 2003 and has contributed significantly to the growth of the otolaryngology residency program.

Hotez to receive advocacy award

Dr. Peter HotezDr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor, will receive the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Award for Sustained National Leadership, part of Research!America's 22nd annual Advocacy Awards, for his far-reaching work in the areas of neglected tropical disease research and vaccine development. Hotez and the other recipients of the Advocacy Awards will be honored at a ceremony next spring in the nation's capital.

Oct. 3: Memorial service for Dr. William Butler

A memorial service for Dr. William T. Butler will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, in Cullen Auditorium with a reception following in Rayzor Lounge. Please note that the circular drive in front of main Baylor will close at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 3. Those who are picked up in the circular drive at the end of the day are advised to be picked up at the Jewish Institute for Medical Research Building. Deliveries in front of the building will not be allowed starting at 4:30 p.m. The Baylor shuttle will continue regular service, but will pick up and drop off passengers in front of the Jewish Institute Building. Butler, the second president of Baylor College of Medicine, died on Friday, Sept. 22, after a short illness. Oct. 2-6: Diversity and Inclusion Week

Diversity and Inclusion Week will be celebrated at Baylor Oct. 2 – 6. Some of the week's events include:
-A photo exhibit of diversity at Baylor, A Hallway at main Baylor, throughout the week.
-A Compassionate Conversation: Understanding the Science of Unconscious Bias: Wednesday, Oct. 4, noon to 1:30 p.m., M100 and 5:15 to 6:45 p.m., M321; focused on the book "Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People," with discussion led by Dr. Janice Sabin, a collaborator of the book's co-author, to understand the science of unconscious and implicit cognition.
-Diversity and Inclusion Lecture, "Leading to Promote Inclusion in a Diverse Work and Training Environment," Thursday, Oct. 5, at noon in Cullen Auditorium, reception following in Rayzor Lounge, by Dr. Chester Brown, professor and division chief of genetics and St. Jude Chair of Excellence in Genetics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
-Donation drive benefiting Houston Diaper Bank, Casa de Esperanza and BCM-affiliate schools. See a list of items needed.

Oct. 3: Gruber Genetics Prize ceremony

Baylor will host the 2017 Gruber Genetics Prize ceremony honoring geneticists Dr. Stephen J. Elledge at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 3, in Cullen Auditorium. He is being recognized for his discoveries concerning the molecular mechanisms of the DNA-damage response pathway, part of which took place while he was a faculty member at Baylor. He will deliver a lecture titled, "Microgenetics: What we can learn from Bits of Genes."

Oct. 12: Faculty research mentor training

Faculty research mentors are invited to attend a four-hour workshop focused on skill-building activities in four mentoring competencies: Aligning Expectations, Maintaining Effective Communications, Fostering Independence and Resilience and Promoting Professional Development. Curriculum is based on materials generated by the NIH-funded National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) but will be tailored to research mentors at the College. The workshop will be held Oct. 12 from 1 to 5 p.m. To attend, please contact Anna Marie Sokac, a master facilitator of the NRMN.

Join the Baylor Heart Walk team

Join Baylor's Ace of Hearts team for the 2017 American Heart Association Heart Walk on Saturday, Oct. 28. The 5k event starts at 8 a.m. in the Texas Medical Center. Harvey Relief T-shirts support Baylor community

Show your support for Baylor College of Medicine families affected by Hurricane Harvey by wearing your Harvey Relief Fund T-shirt this Friday, Sept. 29. Don't have a shirt yet? Get yours on Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the E hallway by the cafeteria at main Baylor. Shirts are $25; pay on site or pre-order and pay online. Sales benefit the Harvey Relief Fund for students, trainees, faculty and staff who were impacted by the storm.

Visiting scientist in space medicine opportunity

The Translational Research Institute at Baylor is offering a visiting scientist opportunity for an individual specializing in omics. This visiting scientist would work at NASA Johnson Space Center for 6 to 12 months to assist in developing NASA research plans involving omics and also have the opportunity to perform some research of their own while at NASA.
