Allen-Rhoades to pen Doximity op-eds

Dr. Wendy Allen-RhoadesDr. Wendy Allen Rhoades, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology, has recently been selected as part of the 2019-2020 cohort of Doximity Fellows to write six Op-Med pieces for Doximity, an online networking service for medical professionals. Doximity Fellows are a select group of inspired clinicians and leaders in medical news curation, storytelling and content creation.

Bozkurt to lead heart failure society

Dr. Biykem BozkurtDr. Biykem Bozkurt has been elected president of the Heart Failure Society of America. She assumed the presidency this month after serving as president-elect and after 15 years as a member of the organization where she participated in planning, advocacy, education, scientific and research activities. Bozkurt is professor of medicine - cardiology and holds the Mary and Gordon Cain Chair of Internal Medicine in the Winters Center for Heart Failure Research, as well as the W.A. "Tex" and Deborah Moncrief, Jr. Chair in medicine at Baylor.

Ellis, Hoyos earn Komen grants

Dr. Matthew EllisDr. Valentina HoyosDr. Matthew Ellis, professor and director of the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, and Dr. Valentina Hoyos, assistant professor at the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy, were awarded grants from Susan G. Komen for their research on new ways to treat metastatic breast cancer. Ellis will receive $400,000 to define pathways and molecules that may be targets for treatment in patients with endocrine therapy resistant advanced disease. Hoyos will receive $449,220 to study how to teach T-cells, a component of the immune system, to target and kill breast cancer metastases.

McDeavitt to chair PM&R board

Dr. James McDeavittDr. James McDeavitt was elected chair of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation board of directors last January, and began his three-year term last month. In this role, he will lead board meetings, attend committee means, participate in strategic planning with leadership of PM&R specialty societies and represent ABPMR in various initiatives.

Educational projects developed by Baylor College of Medicine faculty and trainees will be highlighted today at the annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship, noon – 3 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Sept. 24: Global Health discussion (date corrected)

Dr. Sharmila Anandasabapathy, director of Baylor Global Initiatives and a gastroenterologist, will discuss global health challenges and the development of new technologies to address them in a conversation format with Dr. Elizabeth Yu Chiao, professor of medicine – infectious diseases, presented by the Yale Alumni Nonprofit Alliance, Tuesday, Sept. 24, 6 – 8 p.m., at the Baylor Medical Center on the McNair Campus, conference rooms A and B. Sept. 27: Diversity Week kick-off

A slate of activities to celebrate national Diversity and Inclusion Week kick off with an ice cream social next Friday, Sept. 27, 4-5:30 p.m., Alkek Lobby, hosted by the Association of Graduate Student Diversity and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Sept. 30: Memorial for Sarah Trevino

A gathering of friends and colleagues will be held on Monday, Sept. 30, 3:30-5 p.m., in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor in honor of Sarah Trevino, longtime Baylor employee who died in a recent car accident.

Personal computer procurement

The Information Technology and Supply Chain Management teams have developed standard procedures for personal computer procurement throughout the College. This process is completed through the Supplier Relationship Marketplace, or SRM, where a special catalog of standard inventory has been developed for Baylor. For users who require non-standard equipment, an exception process has been established to ensure that the purchase is made from an approved vendor and that IT encrypts the system and installs required software before delivery. Submit stories for 'Off Script' program

Off Script, a program of the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, offers the opportunity for members of the Baylor and TMC community to share their experiences in the healthcare field. Stories on the topic of dealing with conflict are being accepted through Sept. 30, and select stories will be chosen to be shared at the Off Script event Nov. 14 at UT Health’s McGovern School of Medicine. Calling all artists!

Baylor will host its annual Art Show benefiting the Texas Children's Hospital Arts in Medicine Program in the Alkek Building at main Baylor Nov. 18-22. At least 40% of the sales will go to the Arts in Medicine Program, with the remainder going directly to the artists. Submit your art for the event by contacting Nate Achilly before Oct. 31.
