BCM marks 9/11 anniversary

9/11 flag display

To mark the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the U.S., Baylor has lighted the Roy and Lillie Cullen Building in red and blue. In addition, flags have been placed in the courtyard at main Baylor outside the E-hallway to commemorate the 2,977 lives lost that day. The Baylor community is invited to view the flags and take a moment for personal reflection. See more photos and video.


Awards and Recognitions

Jain, Rusin receive NSF grant

Dr. Parag JainDr. Craig RusinDr. Parag Jain, assistant professor of pediatrics – critical care, and Dr. Craig Rusin, associate professor of pediatrics – cardiology, were awarded a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation. The objective is to develop a new Bluetooth-enabled vital sign monitoring sticker, called "e-tattoo." This technology will be integrated with a state-of-the-art virtual patient monitoring system called Sickbay, with the goal of diagnosing pneumonia in both inpatient and outpatient settings (home monitoring).

Vanegas-Arroyave earns Alzheimer's research grant

Dr. Nora Vanegas-ArroyaveDr. Nora Vanegas-Arroyave, assistant professor of neurology and director of neuromodulation research for the Department of Neurology, has been awarded a $3.7 million R01 research project grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to support her work, "Investigating the neuroanatomical underpinnings of apathy in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases."

Human Resources hosts Money Chats, a special series of financial discussions with Ayco, a personal financial management company, each Wednesday in September from noon – 1 p.m. by Zoom. Drop in to chat with an Ayco coach about the topic of the day or ask your own question. Topics may include financial planning strategies and benefit plan elections for the coming year. CVRI Fall Seminar Series

The Cardiovascular Research Institute’s Fall Seminar Series continues Sept. 15, at noon, with a talk by Zoom with Dr. Sean Wu of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute on cell proliferation during cardiomyocyte development. Register here.

Patient Care Awards workshop

A faculty workshop, Sept. 16, 2 – 4 p.m. by Zoom, will offer tips and strategies for preparing a clinical portfolio for the Patient Care awards. This workshop will go over how to document clinical, quality improvement and advocacy contributions as well as an overview of each clinical award and due dates. Register by email at faced@bcm.edu. Learners only: Free tickets for reading series

Medical, graduate and health professions students, residents and fellows are invited to attend an Inprint reading by Zoom for free, first-come, first-served, where prominent writers read and discuss their new books with another writer. Upcoming events in the series include Sept. 20, with author Laura Goff and her novel, "Matrix," and Sept. 27 with Ruth Ozeki discussing "The Book of Form and Emptiness," 7 – 8 p.m. for both. Offered by the Narrative Medicine Program at Baylor's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy and Inprint, through a grant from the Association of American Medical Colleges. Deadline extended to apply for director of clinical sciences curriculum

The deadline has been extended to Sept. 30 for faculty to apply for director of clinical sciences curriculum in the School of Medicine. This position will provide leadership and oversight for the clinical sciences curriculum under the direction of the associate dean for undergraduate medical education curriculum. Thank a postdoc

The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs is hosting a kudoboard for faculty, staff, students and postdocs to post messages and images of appreciation for research postdoctoral associates and fellows. The kudoboard is open for postings through Sept. 21. The final kudoboard will be shared during National Postdoctoral Appreciation Week, Sept. 20 – 24.

Participants needed for bone health study

Adults in good health, age 20 to 30 years, are needed for a study on bone health. To be eligible, participants should never have had weight loss surgery and should be males weighing between 220 to 400 pounds or females between 191 to 400 pounds. Females also cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding. The study requires one 90-minute visit for height, weight, waist measurements, measurement of bone density and completing questionnaires.
