Counseling sessions

Dr. Bella Schanzer, associate professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, is leading sessions that offer individuals the opportunity to talk about their experiences and feelings during and after Harvey. Back-up care reimbursement deadline extended

The Bright Horizons Back-up Care Advantage deadline to receive a stipend to cover the cost of a post-Harvey caregiver within your own network, such as relative, babysitter or friend, has been extended through Sept. 11. For more information, call 877-242-2737 or visit the Bright Horizons Back-Up Care intranet page.

Temporary address? Update with HR

If you have a temporary change of address due to the storm, be sure to update by Sept. 25 so that you can receive 2018 Open Enrollment materials, which will be mailed in early October. Update by logging in to Employee Self-Service. Materials also will be available online for review by Oct. 4. Open enrollment is Oct. 9-23. Questions? Awards and Recognitions

Frazier honored for lifetime achievements

Dr. O. "Bud" Howard Frazier, professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Transplantation and Circulatory Support, has been named the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient by International Society of Heart and Lung Transplant for his outstanding achievements and tireless dedication in the field of advanced heart failure, heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. He will be presented the award at the 38th ISHLT Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions in Nice, France, next April.

Hanchard named to ASHG board

Dr. Neil Hanchard, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics and with the Children's Nutrition Research Center, was elected to the American Society of Human Genetics Board of Directors. Hanchard and his fellow new board members will begin their terms in January 2018 and serve three-year terms.

E3: diaBEATes information sessions begin Sept. 11

The next installment of E3: diaBEATes will be held at main Baylor, led by registered dietitian Roberta Anding. The program is open to all benefits-eligible employees with diabetes, at risk for diabetes or seeking to learn more information about healthy nutrition and lifestyle changes. Information sessions will be held Sept. 11, 18, and 25 at noon in room M112. Employees who are interested in enrolling in the program must attend one of the information sessions. Sept. 13: Surgery Grand Rounds start

The fall 2017 Department of Surgery Grand Rounds start Wednesday, Sept. 13, with Dr. David Berger, professor of surgery and senior vice president and COO at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, on "Eat or Be Eaten: Why Surgeons Need to be Hospital Leaders." Surgery grand rounds are held Wednesdays from 7 to 8 a.m. at main Baylor in room N315 in the Alkek Building. See the upcoming schedule.

Sept. 14: Ethics Center launches seminar series

The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy is holding a seminar titled "In the Path of Harvey: Ethical Issues in Providing Clinical Care during a Natural Disaster" as part of its 2017-18 speaker series. The event, on Sept. 14 from noon to 1:30 pm at Grappino di Nino, is open to the public. Purchase tickets.

Registration open for conference on chronic illness

Registration is open for the 18th annual Chronic Illness and Disability Conference: Transition from Pediatric to Adult-based Care, set for Oct. 5-6, in Onstead Auditorium, 6767 Bertner Ave. The conference is open to healthcare providers and parents and caregivers; CME credits available. Register online by Sunday, Oct. 1.

Get involved in Diversity and Inclusion Week

Diversity and Inclusion Week at Baylor will be celebrated Oct. 2-6, and trainees, students, faculty and staff are invited to be interactive participants in the week’s events. Watch for more communications on 2017 Diversity and Inclusion Week events. Here are some of the ways to get involved:
Diversity video: Stop by the DeBakey Library and Museum in the Alkek Lobby at main Baylor on Thursday, Sept. 14, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., to be a part of the diversity video highlighting how Baylor is a welcoming place for all. You'll be asked to fill in the blank on a sign that says, "Baylor Welcomes ____,” and you will be filmed holding the sign.
Compassionate Conversation book discussion: The first 50 people to sign up for one of two Compassionate Conversation sessions, to be held Oct. 4, will receive a free copy of "Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People," which will be the focus of the sessions. Sign up and get the book Sept. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the DeBakey Library.
Diversity map: Help to complete the map that showcases the amazing diversity of our BCM community. Please take a few minutes and go to the digital map and add your birthplace "map pin."
To add a pin:
- Hover over the "Additions" tab
- Select "Add Marker – Simple"
- Put your initials, your first name or "Anonymous" in "Entry Name"
- Enter your birth location in "Location"
- Press Submit. The map automatically saves your pin.
Diversity photo gallery: Submit a high-resolution photo showing what diversity at Baylor look like to you to diversity-inclusionweek@bcm.edu with your name and the names of those included. A selection of the photos submitted will be featured in a display in the A hallway at main Baylor.
