Kaplow earns grant for hurricane trauma response

Dr. Julie KaplowDr. Julie Kaplow, associate professor of pediatrics – psychology at Baylor, chief of psychology service and director of the Trauma and Grief Center at Texas Children's Hospital, received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to partner with the Boys and Girls Club of Puerto Rico in an effort to assist children and families impacted by Hurricane Maria. The grant will support a large-scale mental health needs assessment and training of community and school clinicians in evidence-based, culturally informed treatments for childhood trauma and grief.

Mindikoglu named fellow by liver disease association

Dr. Ayse MindikogluDr. Ayse Leyla Mindikoglu, associate professor of medicine and surgery, has been awarded the Fellow designation of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. It is awarded to members who have made a significant contribution to the knowledge and/or practice of liver and biliary diseases, and who are considered leaders in the field.

Rico-Hesse honored with Yale lecture

Dr. Rebecca Rico-HesseDr. Rebecca Rico-Hesse, professor of molecular virology and microbiology, will deliver the Frank Black Memorial Lecture at the Yale School of Public Health in early 2020. The lecture highlights a speaker who has made influential discoveries in the field of viruses and vaccines and will coincide with the 50th anniversary of coeducation in Yale College and the 150th anniversary of women students at the university. Rico-Hesse was selected for her contributions to the study of dengue virus, including working to develop a dengue vaccine and to inspire the next generation of women in science.

Sept. 7: TMC Bike Rodeo

Baylor bike enthusiasts are invited to the first TMC Bike Rodeo, tomorrow, Sept. 7, 9 a.m. – noon, 2103 S. Braeswood Blvd. Activities will include bike games, safety demonstrations and a skills course. Families welcome; prizes offered and lunch provided. Learn more about this free event.

Sept. 9: Women in Medicine panel discussion

The BCM American Medical Women's Association presents Women in Medicine, an expert panel presentation and discussion on the experiences of women in medicine and medical education, Monday, Sept. 9, noon – 1 p.m., room M112 at main Baylor. Lunch provided; RSVP online.

Sept. 9: Celebrate Dr. Adam Kuspa

A reception to honor and thank Dr. Adam Kuspa for his 25-plus years of service to the College will be held Sept. 9 at 4:30 p.m. in Alkek Lobby. Kuspa, Kuspa, senior vice president and dean of research, has accepted the position of president of the Welch Foundation, effective Sept. 23.

Sept. 11: Ethics Grand Rounds

Ethics Grand Rounds is Wednesday, Sept. 11, 5 – 6 p.m., at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, Denton A. Cooley Auditorium, on "The Surrogate Decision Maker: More than Just a Perfunctory Signature," presented by Claire Horner, J.D., assistant professor in Baylor’s Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy. Participants will explore the role of surrogate decision makers in healthcare, including ethical foundations and legal obligations. CME credit available. College position statement addresses youth smoking and vaping

The new 'Tobacco 21' law has gone into effect in Texas, setting the legal age to purchase tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, to age 21. This is an important step in addressing youth smoking and vaping. Blue lights for prostate cancer
