Mental health providers: Survey on stress during COVID

Mental health providers who have experienced heightened stress during transitions in the workplace due to COVID-19 are invited to participate in a brief study that will explore mental health provider stress, burnout, styles of coping, and the presence of race-based negative experiences during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Providers over age 18 from all mental health disciplines may participate in the 10 – 15 minute online survey.

Labor Day closure & COVID testing schedule

Baylor College of Medicine will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, for Labor Day. This includes the McNair Campus drive-through COVID-19 testing site and the Occupational Health Program Call Center, as well as the BCM Respiratory Virus Lab. Patients and/or employees with testing orders submitted before noon today will typically be scheduled for this afternoon; orders submitted after noon will be scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 8. Employees with questions about COVID symptoms or obtaining a test can call OHP at 713-798-7880; those who have orders for testing and need to schedule can call 713-798-2300.


Awards and Recognitions

Lin earns genetics fellowship

Dr. Guang LinDr. Guang Lin, visiting assistant professor in molecular and human genetics in the Hugo Bellen Lab at Baylor, is the inaugural recipient of the 2020 Shan and Lee-Jun Wong Endowed Fellowship in Genetics. He will receive a $30,000 fellowship in support of his research on Parkinson's disease.

Yu completes AAN leadership program

Dr. Melissa YuDr. Melissa Yu, associate professor of neurology and associate medical director of the neurology clinic at Baylor Medicine as well as a faculty senator, has received recognition from the American Academy of Neurology for her completion of the 2019-2020 Transforming Leaders Program. This competitive program helps the AAN develop future leaders and provides participants the skills and expertise to advance their careers as well as the field of neurology.

Sept. 9: Surgery Grand Rounds starts

Department of Surgery Virtual Grand Rounds resume next week with "Debunking Myths in Bariatric Surgery" by Dr. Samer Mattar, chief of the division of metabolic and bariatric surgery, along with Drs. Juliet Holder-Haynes and S. Julie-Ann Lloyd. Surgery Grand Rounds are held on Wednesdays, 7 – 8 a.m. Learn more.

Sept. 10: Compassionate Conversation

"Bystander Interventions that Create More Inclusive Clinical and Learning Environments," is Thursday, Sept. 10, 5:30 – 7 p.m., with Dr. Ali Abbas Asghar-Ali. Register online by Sept. 8 to attend this virtual conversation, or if you signed up for the original date (Aug. 28), your registration information is still valid.

Sept. 11: Monroe discusses 'Silver Linings'

Provost Dr. Alicia Monroe presents Pediatric Grand Rounds on "A Creative Space for Harvesting Silver Linings" at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, via Zoom as part of the department's annual educator orientation. This 10th annual grand rounds is in honor of Dr. Martin Lorin.

College position statement addresses racial justice

Baylor has issued a statement emphasizing its strengthened commitment to racial justice to improve public health and outlining five actions for the institution and the community. Read the full position paper. To help meet the goals laid out in the paper, the Office of the President seeks proposals for grants of up to $50,000 from diverse multidisciplinary research teams to address the root cause of health inequities and ensure equitable health outcomes. This RFA document provides more details and submission information.

Scholars program for underrepresented faculty & fellows

The Center of Excellence in Health Equity, Training and Research is seeking Baylor clinical fellows and junior faculty from underrepresented in medicine populations to participate in a scholars program. Scholars selected will participate in didactic sessions and activities on other topics, including career preparedness, health informatics, grant and scientific writing, health equity research and cultural competence in the clinic. Research study opportunity: Asthma in children

Children between 24 to 47 months of age are needed to participate in the PARK Clinical Research Study: Preventing Asthma in High-Risk Kids at Baylor/Texas Children's Hospital. Participants must have had two to four wheezing episodes in the past 12 months and have a parent or sibling with asthma or allergies. The study includes allergy testing; breathing tests; urine, stool, nasal and house dust sample collection; compensation; study supplies and medication; and asthma education.
