Flores to speak about pediatric clinical practices

Dr. Ricardo Flores, assistant professor of pediatrics – oncology at Baylor and Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers and member of the NCI-designated Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, has been invited to present about pediatric clinical practices and research findings at the Puerto Rico Hematology and Medical Oncology Association Annual Meeting. He is the first pediatrician to have been invited to present at this venue.

Medical student Travis honored for professionalism

Kate Travis is the recipient of the 2017-18 Adam Cohen Medical Student Professionalism Award in Pediatrics, based on nominations from her student peers, residents, faculty and clerkship administrators. She was recognized for her empathy, character and kindness toward patients and others.

Sept. 5: Symposium on latest in HIV research

Baylor College of Medicine and the Houston Health Department will host a community event to share the latest in HIV research in an easy-to-understand format on Sept. 5, 12:30 to 6 p.m., at the Cooley Center, 1941 East Road, 77054. Moderated by Dr. Thomas Giordano, associate professor of medicine and section chief of infectious diseases, the event is open to health professionals, community members, staff from community- and faith-based organizations and local officials. Free lunch provided for those who RSVP.

Sept. 6: Education Grand Rounds

Join Education Grand Rounds on Thursday, Sept. 6, noon to 1 p.m., in room M321 at main Baylor, for a discussion on the concept of feedback orientation and why it matters for clinician-educators with Dr. Paul Levy, professor and chair of psychology at the University of Akron. Sept. 7: Surgical Education and Simulation Conference

Baylor will host the Texas Association of Surgical Skills Laboratories' Surgical Education and Simulation Conference, Friday, Sept. 7, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in rooms M321/324 at main Baylor. Topics will include robotics, endoscopy, virtual reality teaching, motivational interviewing and more. Sept. 7-8: Matthew Carter Lecture and Service Day

The annual Compassion and the Art of Medicine lecture series starts on Friday, Sept. 7, at noon in Cullen Auditorium with the Matthew Carter Memorial Lecture, delivered by Dr. Stephen G. Kimmel, a pediatric surgeon at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center who also contributes to global health through projects such as earthquake relief in Haiti. The Matthew Carter Memorial Lecture honors the memory of the first-year Baylor medical student killed in September 2000 and carries on his message of compassion and caring to successive generations of medical students and health professionals. Students also take part in a day of community service on the Saturday following the lecture. This year, students will volunteer at Bo’s Place, Children’s Assessment Center, the AIDS Foundation, Houston Food Bank, Hermann Park Conservancy, Project C.U.R.E. and Small Steps Nurturing Center.

Sept. 13: Ethics conversation series launches; tickets available

The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy's The Conversation speaker series resumes on Sept. 13, 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Damian's Cucina Italiana with a talk on "Prescription for Addiction? Reflections on Managing Pain during America's Opioid Crisis." Dr. Travis Rieder, research scholar at Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, will examine the factors driving today’s opioid epidemic, the response to it and what justifiable pain medicine looks like in the midst of the crisis. Submissions open for cardiovascular research grants

Applications are being accepted for the Cardiovascular Research Institute pilot awards, with a focus on collaborative proposals that are likely to lead to externally funded grants. Two to four grants of $25,000 will be awarded for clinical, translational or basic cardiovascular research. Apply online by Sept. 17.

Remember to log on to Employee Self-Service by Sept. 24 to view your current benefit elections and update or reset your password, if necessary, address and dependents to be added to your healthcare plans. TMC Library news

The Texas Medical Center Library recently changed its method for accessing electronic resources to OpenAthens, which offers several new features, particularly single sign on. Library staff worked closely with the IT group at Baylor to map OpenAthens to our own institutional login so that a separate password to access library resources would not be required.
