Sedgwick earns Love Award

Dr. Emily Sedgwick, associate professor in the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, part of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, received the 2016 Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism, an honor given annually to a Baylor physician who best exemplifies professionalism in the practice of medicine. Sedgwick has dedicated her career to improving healthcare and making the breast cancer treatment process more streamlined and less intimidating for patients. One of her most significant accomplishments has been building and implementing a same-day program in the Breast Center, which allows a patient to receive a mammogram, get results and, if necessary, have a biopsy on the same day, without having to make separate appointments or leave the clinic. Sedgwick, who also is chief quality officer for the Baylor Faculty Group Practice, received the award at the School of Medicine White Coat Ceremony Aug. 12, where she delivered a talk on professionalism.

Wheeler to speak at cancer summit

Dr. Thomas Wheeler, chair and professor of pathology, will be a featured faculty member and speaker at the First Global Summit on Precision Diagnosis for Prostate Cancer, where he will discuss anatomic pathology. The summit will take place Sept. 16-18 in Boston, with the goal of bringing together leaders from across disciplines to discuss novel ideas for improving screening, early detection and treatment of prostate cancer as well as educating key healthcare stakeholders.

Market Days Aug. 31

The next Market Days at Baylor is Thursday, Aug. 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Vendors will be selling artisanal coffee, chocolate, nuts, skin care products and more. Market Days is hosted by the Resource Stewardship and Sustainability Program at Baylor. Dates available on campus for biometric screening

There are still plenty of spots available for biometric screenings at main Baylor on Sept. 8, 14 and 15 and the Children's Hospital of San Antonio on Oct 4. This simple assessment helps identify potential health risks like diabetes or heart disease. It includes physical measurements and a blood draw to determine fasting blood glucose levels, blood pressure, total cholesterol, and waist circumference and body mass index. Participants who complete a BCM BeWell Biometric Screening (Vitality Check) and their 2016 Vitality Health Review by Nov. 25 will receive 3,500 BCM BeWell Vitality points the month after successful completion. Enjoy ice cream and learn about new HR recognition program

The human resources department will be introducing a new reward and recognition program to align with Baylor values. The RIITE Rewards Program will allow faculty and staff to recognize and reward their colleagues for exemplary contributions to Baylor. A new online tool has been created to support this program and will go-live for nominations and peer-to-peer recognition beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6. Learn more about the program and online tool at the RIITE Rewards Kick-Off Event and Ice Cream Social at one of the following dates/locations. All events are from 1 to 3 p.m. unless otherwise specified.
