Bertuch named to NIH study section
Dr. Alison Bertuch, associate professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology at Baylor and Texas Children’s Cancer Center, recently was named chair of the Molecular Genetics B (MGB) Study Section of the National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review, for a two-year term. Applications reviewed by the MGB study section involve molecular mechanisms of genome replication, maintenance and gene expression.
Shah to serve on nonprofit board
Dr. Asim Shah was appointed at a recent Fort Bend Commissioners Court meeting to represent Fort Bend County on the Board of Trustees of Texana, a public, nonprofit organization that provides behavioral healthcare and developmental disabilities services to a six county area. Also this summer, Shah, professor and executive vice chair in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, presented workshops in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan on “Mental Health in Early Years: Detection and Prevention” and “Rising Incidence of Suicide in Southeast Asia.” Here, Shah is pictured relaxing in the mountains of north Pakistan.

Aug. 27: Special Olympics panel
The student wellness initiative, BCM LIFE, invites the BCM Community to learn about Special Olympics Texas and explore volunteer opportunities with the organization, noon – 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27, room 201A at main Baylor. Gain insight on its mission and programs in the Houston community and hear from Special Olympic athletes about their experiences. Eligible employees can earn 50 BCM BeWell Vitality Points.
Aug. 29: DocTalk on vaccines and global health
Join DocTalk at noon on Thursday, Aug. 29 in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor, for a discussion on the convergence of vaccines and global health with Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, professor and associate dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor. Eligible employees can earn BCM BeWell Vitality Points.
Sept. 5: Team Discovery on ‘Toxic Teams’
The next Team Discovery session, Teams and Conflict: Challenges and Opportunities, is 3:30 – 5 p.m. on Sept. 5 in room M321/323 in the DeBakey Building at main Baylor, led by Melanie Jagneaux, ombuds at Baylor. Volunteers needed: Baylor Infant Biomarker of Nutrition Study
Researchers at the Children’s Nutrition Research Center are seeking healthy infants 4 months and younger and their adult caregivers for a study to learn if a quick skin-reading test can reveal information about infant nutrition. Requires three in-person visits, and participants undergo skin readings and body measurements and provide infant food records and optional blood and breast milk samples. Compensation provided.
