Awards and Recognitions

Storch and colleagues awarded grant for OCD research

Dr. Eric StorchDr. Eric Storch, professor and vice chair in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, recently was awarded a $2 million-plus U01 grant from the National Institute for Mental Health to understand how genetic factors influence the risk of developing obsessive-compulsive disorder in Latin American individuals. In collaboration with the University of North Carolina (Dr. James Crowley, principal investigator), this study will yield the world's largest ancestrally diverse sample of OCD cases to genotype, fine-map genome-wide significant loci and calculate individual polygenic risk scores as a measure of genetic liability to OCD. Other co-investigators at BCM include Drs. Wayne Goodman, Gabe Lazaro-Munoz, Stacey Pereira, Sophie Schneider, Elizabeth Atkinson, Anthony Zoghbi, Andrew Guzick, Liza Bonin, Karin Price, Kelly Banneyer and Kirti Saxena.

Kickoff for Texas Developmental Center for AIDS Research

Join the kickoff event for the Texas Developmental Center for AIDS Research, Monday, Aug. 23, 1 – 3 p.m., by Zoom (Password: 315393). Baylor is the lead site of the new center that seeks to prioritize and grow HIV research and support the effort to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Houston. Funded by an NIH grant, it is a collaboration with UTHealth and the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio. Learn more.

Voter registration drive

Need to register to vote in Texas or update your address? Volunteers from the League of Women Voters will be at main Baylor on Tuesday, Aug. 24, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the E-hallway outside Morrison's Café to assist with any voter registration needs. Questions? Email Katie Holtman.

CVRI fall seminar series launches

The Cardiovascular Research Institute Fall 2021 Seminar Series kicks off Wednesday, Aug. 25, noon – 1 p.m., with a talk on "The Gut Microbiome and Immunity in Salt-sensitive Hypertension," presented by Dr. Annet Kirabo of Vanderbilt University College of Medicine. Career Advancement Series

Sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and the Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development, the Baylor College of Medicine Career Advancement Series provides tools to enhance leadership skills and assist with professional and personal goals for advancement for BCM early and mid-career faculty four categories: instructors, assistant professors, associate professors and assistant professor women faculty group. Cardiovascular research awards available

Applications are open for pilot awards of up to $15,000 from BCM's Cardiovascular Research Institute. Proposals in clinical, translational or basic cardiovascular research should promote collaboration between investigators and be likely to lead to externally funded grants. See more info and apply.

Faculty needed for mock residency interviews

Faculty members are needed to serve as mock interviewers and mentors for medical students preparing for residency interviews. Most mock interviews will be conducted by Zoom with a few in-person opportunities for students. Both formats will consist of a 20-minute interview followed by a 10-minute debrief/feedback session with the student. A minimum two-hour commitment from faculty is required for this year's mock interview program, which will run from Sept. 13 – Nov. 11. Learn more and sign up.

It's time to start preparing for the next staff performance management season. See key dates below, read a summary of what's new and find helpful tools on the HR staff performance webpage.

  • Sept. 1: Employee self-evaluations and goal plan launch in SuccessFactors.
  • Sept. 17: Self-evaluation deadline (employee routes to manager).
  • Oct. 31: Manager deadline to finish evaluation forms, hold staff discussions and complete signature steps in SuccessFactors.
  • Nov. 30: Deadline for staff discussions on goals and entry in SuccessFactors. All staff employees required to have at least one goal.
