Erickson receives kidney research grant

Dr. Kevin EricksonFor the second straight year, Dr. Kevin Erickson, assistant professor of medicine – nephrology, has been awarded the Southeast Texas Research Grant from the National Kidney Foundation to further examine whether receiving regular nephrology care prior to developing end-stage renal disease helps patients remain employed after their kidneys fail. He received the grant as part of the NKF Young Investigator Research Grant Program.

Salihu named editor of journal

Dr. Hamisu SalihuDr. Hamisu Salihu, professor of family and community medicine and center director of Baylor's Center of Excellence in Health Equity, Training and Research, is the newly elected executive editor of the International Journal of Maternal and Child Health and AIDS. He will be responsible for decision-making regarding submitted manuscripts.

Aug. 22: Grand rounds on insurance and health equity

Health Equity Grand Rounds will feature Dr. Laura Medford-Davis, assistant professor of emergency medicine, on "The Role of Insurance in Achieving Health Equity," Wednesday, Aug. 22, 10 – 11 a.m., in room M321 in the DeBakey Building at main Baylor. The grand rounds are a program of Baylor's Center of Excellence in Health Equity, Training and Research, part of the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity. This session is held in conjunction with the Department of Emergency Medicine grand rounds.

Aug. 23: Physician networking

Find a Physician Networking Happy Hour is Thursday, Aug. 23, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the first floor conference rooms at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center. Food and beverages provided; free underground parking available. Network with your colleagues and meet new physicians to build meaningful relationships and promote internal referrals! Questions? Save the date for September events

-Baylor College of Medicine and the Houston Health Department will host a community event to share the latest in HIV research in an easy-to-understand format on Sept. 5, 12:30 – 6 p.m., at the Cooley Center, 1941 East Road, 77054. Moderated by Dr. Thomas Giordano, associate professor of medicine and section chief of infectious diseases, the event is open to health professionals, community members, staff from community- and faith-based organizations and local officials. Free lunch provided for those who RSVP.
-Restorative Support for Families after Traumatic Death: Building a Bereavement-Informed Community, co-sponsored by Baylor, Texas Children's Hospital and other organizations, is Sept. 21-22 at the Texas Children's Pavilion for Women. BeWell news: Camp Gladiator event Aug. 25

Join the BCM BeWell team at the Camp Gladiator Stadium Takeover Saturday, Aug. 25, 7 a.m. to noon, at Minute Maid Park! The event, celebrating 10 years of the Camp Gladiator fitness program, will include workout stations along a 3-mile course that winds through the concourse, bleachers and field. Vote for Global Hope at SXSW

Help bring attention to the issue of pediatric cancer in sub-Saharan Africa, where 90 percent of children diagnosed with the disease do not survive, by voting for the Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers Global Hope program to be a featured panel at the 2019 SXSW conference and entertainment festival in Austin. Vote online.

New campus lighting improves security

New lighting is being installed around the main Baylor campus for added safety of employees and trainees. Lighting improvements include:
-Two new LED wall-mounted fixtures and three LED recessed downlights at the main Cullen Building entry doors to supplement the LED canopy lights that previously were installed (pictured above).

-New LED floodlight that illuminates the ABBR-Commons bicycle rack area.
-Two new LED floodlights that illuminate the north side of the shipping/receiving dock parking area.
-Two new LED wall lights that illuminate the Cullen-DeBakey bicycle rack area.
