Baker honored by infectious disease society

Dr. Carol J. Baker, professor of pediatrics and of molecular virology and microbiology, was selected to receive the 2016 Alexander Fleming Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Infectious Diseases Society of America. The award is granted to a member or fellow of the society in recognition of a career that reflects major contributions to the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge about infectious diseases. It will be presented at IDWeek 2016, which is being held Oct. 26-30 in New Orleans. Baker's research is focused on neonatal infections and vaccine-preventable diseases.

Birnbaum honored at cardiology conference

Dr. Yochai Birnbaum, professor of medicine – cardiology and the John S. Dunn Chair in Cardiology Research and Education, won the Walter Bleifeld Memorial Award for distinguished work in the field of clinical research at the annual scientific sessions of the International Academy of Cardiology, held at the 21st World Congress on Heart Disease July 30 – Aug. 2 in Boston.

Van Ness named neurology academy fellow

Dr. Paul Van Ness, professor of neurology, was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. This designation recognizes exemplary clinical and academic work and achievements in neuroscience and commitment to the community and the Academy, which includes more than 30,000 neurologists and neuroscience professionals around the world. Van Ness' areas of interest in the field are epilepsy, clinical neurophysiology and general neurology.

Indian independence celebration Aug. 13

The Indian Students and Scholars Association is hosting an Independence Day Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 10:30 a.m. in Morrison Cafe. The event will include cultural performances, a rendition of the Indian national anthem and a $5 Indian lunch.

Anandasabapathy to speak on global innovation

Dr. Sharmila Anandasabapathy, professor of medicine and director of Baylor Global Initiatives, will give a talk on "Innovating for Global Health: The Emergency Smart Pod," as part of the World Affairs Council of Greater Houston and TEDX Sugar Land program on the theme of "Small Town, Huge Ideas." The daylong event is Aug. 27 at the Ismaili Jamatkhana Center, 1700 First Colony Blvd. in Sugar Land. Anandasabapathy will talk about the USAID-funded emergency smart pod that can be deployed for use in disaster situations. Free tickets will be awarded via a lottery system but registration is required.

Back-to-school book drive: Donate now

In partnership with the Houston Bar Association, Baylor will be collecting new and gently used books through Sept. 9. The books will be donated to over 30 literacy programs in the city of Houston. The drive is focusing on young adult and children's books, but all books will be accepted. View the book drive drop off locations.

Registration open for medical terminology/anatomy course

Baylor's 43rd Annual Medical Terminology/Anatomy and Physiology course will be held Tuesdays from Sept. 13 – Nov. 8 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in room M112 in the DeBakey Building at main Baylor. The course offers a basic understanding of medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology – useful for anyone who works in the medical field, such as medical secretaries, receptionists, lab and records technicians and coders, nurse assistants and any kind of healthcare provider. Certificates will be awarded on successful completion of the program. The cost of the course $180 for those registering on or before Sept. 14, then increases to $200. A textbook also is required. Imaging hours changing

To improve access for patients, McNair Imaging will expand hours of operations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. effective Sept. 1, 2016. Also, Baylor Clinic will change hours of operations to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The lab at Baylor Clinic will remain open until 5:30 p.m.
