Hanania honored for excellence in education

Dr. Nicola Hanania, associate professor of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine in the Department of Medicine, was named a Distinguished CHEST Educator, a new distinction from the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) to provide national recognition of excellence in continuing medical education. The award is given to CHEST members who have maintained a large volume of high-quality CHEST education delivery and design over the prior three years and have participated in formal faculty development in CHEST or other programs. He will be honored at the CHEST 2017 Annual Meeting in Toronto in the fall.

Monroe to serve on Baylor U. board

Dr. Alicia Monroe, provost and senior vice president for academic and faculty affairs, has been named to the Baylor University Board of Regents. The College has an affiliation agreement with the Waco institution that includes joint appointments of faculty, an undergraduate summer program in tropical medicine and the B2B program that provides provisional acceptance of six students per year to matriculate to BCM upon graduation. She participated in a new regent orientation and attended the regular quarterly board meeting on June 1.

Aug. 1: Abstract deadline for Showcase of Educational Scholarship

The BCM Annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship will be held Sept. 29, and abstracts are being accepted until Tuesday, Aug. 1. The Showcase is the College's premier venue for highlighting scholarship within medical education using a peer-reviewed format, offering the opportunity for conversation and collaboration with colleagues. Aug. 1: Registration opens for onsite biometric screening

Registration starts Aug. 1 for onsite biometric screenings through the BCM BeWell program, to be held Sept. 12-14 in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Benefits-eligible employees who complete a BCM BeWell Biometric Screening and their 2017 Vitality Health Review by Nov. 25 will receive 2,000 BCM BeWell Vitality Points. The biometric screening can be completed through BCM BeWell or by the participant's primary care physician to qualify for the incentive. Aug. 8: Tacos with Teachers

The Center for Professionalism and Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion invite interested students, residents, postdocs and faculty to attend their monthly Tacos with Teachers, Tuesday, Aug. 8, from 7 to 8 a.m., in M108. The program offers a casual setting for members of the Baylor community to meet with a faculty member for a discussion about their career path and tips to maintain connection, meaning and joy in their work, followed by a Q&A session. Breakfast is provided. The next session will feature Dr. James R. Walker, associate professor and director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program-Nurse Anesthesia. New-employee HIPAA education requirements

Federal and state laws require that all Baylor College of Medicine employees complete HIPAA privacy education within 90 days of employment. BCM's policy requires completion of the Privacy and Security (HIPAA) (New Hire) education module within 10 days of hire. All education is available online through AMP Corporate Training. Supervisors should ensure that all new employees in their area complete the HIPAA education within the required time frame. The Compliance Office will send out notifications of non-compliance after 11 days, 31 days and 61 days from date of hire. Failure to complete the required module within the allotted time will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

Volunteer Time Off T-shirts ready for participant pick-up

BCM faculty and staff who participated in the Volunteer Time Off program can pick up their T-shirt in the Office of Communications, Suite 176B at main Baylor, from Wednesday, Aug. 2, to Friday, Aug. 4 from noon to 1:30 p.m. If you have any questions, contact Katie Holtman.

Support student fund-raising project for amputees

Alex Dahinten, a student in the Orthotics and Prosthetics Program, is scheduled to climb a nearly 19,000-foot volcano in Ecuador this weekend with a team of amputees and able-bodied climbers. This challenge is part of an effort to raise awareness and funds for the Range of Motion Project, which provides prosthetic services and educational opportunities to Central American amputees who could not otherwise afford them. It's not too late to support his goal of raising $5,000 for the organization. Good luck Alex and team!
